Dorothy May Simon

Dorothy, age 99, passed away on January 9, 2020. She was born April 27, 1920, in Shepherd, MI, and was raised in Lansing, MI.

Dorothy was a graduate of Eastern High School. She lived in Haslett for 30 years, moving to the vacation home in Gladwin in 1991. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in East Lansing and Sacred Heart Parish in Gladwin. Dorothy retired from Sparrow Hospital after 23 years of dedicated service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ila Kirkconnell; sisters, Wilma Kirkconnell and Lois Casey; brothers, Thomas and Alvin Kirkconnell; husband of 54 years, John L. Simon; sons, John and James; daughter-in-law, Lynne Simon; and grandson, Michael.

Surviving are: son, Thomas (Mary Jane) Simon, Sr. of DeWitt; daughter, Sandra Simon of Lansing; sisters, Norma Marshall of Ann Arbor, and Lucille Alford and Joyce (John) Wise of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She possessed a sharp wit and the gift of gab. She loved music, especially piano, and had a beautiful singing voice. She made friends easily and maintained lifelong friendships. She knew someone everywhere she went! Her favorite pastimes – traveling, cooking, crossword puzzles and letter writing were second only to spending time with her family and friends. Generous and kind, she will be missed immensely.

Rest in peace, Mom, we are certain you are in heaven, doing your own thing.

The funeral liturgy for Dorothy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2020, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Interment will follow in Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Her family will receive relatives and friends from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

I was the recipient of many letters from Aunt Dorothy. Her penmanship was beautiful. I was blessed to be able to correspond with her for many years. I loved her without reserve. I regret that I will not be able to make it to the visitation or funeral because my husband, Dave, is still in intensive care after quadruple bypass surgery. My love to all of the family.

Rest easy now, Grandma. You were so much to so many in your long life. 99 years. Wow! You were the most independent and strong willed woman with the biggest heart. The memories I have with you and sis and mom will live in me forever. With a bushel and a peck and a big, huge hug around the neck, I love you.

Thank you for treating me like a daughter over the years. I have so many wonderful memories – both here and at the cottage. I will never forget. Love you, and may you rest in peace.

It’s been many years since I seen my aunt, I remember her having a quick wit and and she had a great laugh. I will miss aunt Dorthy, but I remember call her aunt Dottie.

Aunt Dorothy was so loving and welcoming to me when I married into the Havens family in 2002. I will always be grateful for her hugs and laughter.
