Doris L. Wilcox

Doris, of Lansing, was born May 31, 1931, near Capac, MI, to Elizabeth (Geibel) and Wesley Kohns, died October 9, 2010.  She graduated from Hurley Hospital School of Nursing in 1952 and worked at Hurley Hospital for a year.  On April 23, 1953, she married John Wilcox of Ionia, MI; together, they started a life and family in Lansing.  Doris worked as an RN at Sparrow Hospital for 40 years, retiring in 1993, having worked in Med-Surg, Post Anesthesia Care Unit and the IV Team.  She actively supported her children’s interests, serving as a Girl Scout troop leader and Cub Scout den mother.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting and needlework, and was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church.  She and John traveled extensively and liked to take their grandchildren on trips.  After retirement, Doris and John volunteered for the Red Cross and were active in AARP and neighborhood functions.

Doris is survived by her husband, John Wilcox; daughter, Karen Wilcox of Lansing; sons, Steven (Christine) Wilcox of Lansing and Alan (Sandra) Wilcox of Farmington Hills, MI; grandchildren, Jan Wilcox, Frances (Christopher) Czuk, Stephanie Wilcox, Bethany Wilcox, Kelsey Wilcox and Emily Wilcox; great-granddaughter, Elena Czuk; brother, William Kohns; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with The Rev. Dr. Rick Martin officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Monday.  In lieu of flowers, Doris requested that a donation be made to the charity of one’s choice.  The Wilcox family would like to thank the staff of Holt Senior Care for the wonderful care that they delivered.
