Donald H. Lowell

  Donald Harrison Lowell, age 94, passed away March 10, 2015. He was born in Clinton County, Michigan on May 7, 1920, son of James and Norma (Ide) Lowell. He was currently of Lansing, Michigan.  Don married the former Iva Georgene “Jean” Daniells in 1942, and she preceded him in death in 1977.  Together, they had seven children.  Don later married the former Betty Jepson in 1980, and she passed away in 2000.  Don was predeceased by brothers Lawrence Lowell and Norman Lowell, and granddaughter Lisa Lowell.

Don is survived by his children: James R. Lowell (Linda), Lake Linden, Michigan; Thomas E. Lowell (Cathy), Grand Ledge, Michigan; Sarah A. Gray (Robert), Saline, Michigan; Linda J. Harvey (Michael), Wacousta, Michigan; Dr. Katy R. Webster, Dewitt, Michigan; Betty L. Simonsen (Randy), L’anse, Michigan; and Donald C. Lowell, Lansing, Michigan.  He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Don graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1937 and attended Michigan State University before entering the Army Air Corps and serving as a pilot and as a flight instructor in World War II.

After serving in the military, Don returned to central Michigan and spent the majority of his adult years working for Consumers Power Company in Lansing, retiring in 1976, last serving as Superintendent of Marketing.  During his tenure at Consumers, he was active in numerous professional organizations, including Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau, Builder’s Exchange of Lansing and Central Michigan, and President of the Lansing Metropolitan Development Authority.  Don was a longtime member of Rotary Club of Lansing, where he compiled 40 years of perfect attendance.  Don was a longtime member of the Wacousta United Methodist Church, member of the Wacousta-Dewitt Masonic Lodge, member of the Grand Ledge Royal Arch Masons and a member of the Lansing Hangar of the Quiet Birdmen.

Don was a loyal and devoted family man.   He was especially proud to be able to promote the development of the Lansing business community during his lifetime, and was always a strong supporter of Michigan State University and the Spartans.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2015, at Wacousta United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Wacousta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel and beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Wacousta United Methodist Church memorial fund.

I never called him Don, I called him Dad because of my respect and love for him. May he rest in peace.
