David J. O’Leary
“Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to sea” Alfred Tennyson
Yes, our beloved Dave O’Leary has put out to sea at the beautiful age of 94. In his wake are those of us grieving the end of a life well lived and the absence of our daily joy.
Perhaps, his most profound contribution to those he loved was to show his gratitude every time we walked in a room or called him on the phone – where the first thing you heard, before hello, was laughter. Gratitude – for our presence. Gratitude – for his great fortune to have us in his life. Gratitude – for the gift of a long life. “I have a great life.”
For those of you who knew Dave O’Leary, no explanation is necessary, for those of you who didn’t, no explanation is adequate.
He lit up a room simply by walking in. His confidence dwarfed his stature; his wit knew no bounds (or what was out of bounds).
He took daily sips of optimism like he had a secret well.
His timing for interjecting the most relevant poetry quote to sum up complex discussions into simple mic drop moments.
He generally found his way into the presidency of any group he was affiliated with, and he wasn’t shy about joining groups.
He had difficulty conjuring a scenario where someone wouldn’t like him. “Have they met me?”
He could be as direct & candid as a 60 Minutes interview, but this propensity for directness was often overshadowed by his warmth and the genuine human connections he was so adept at making.
People were naturally attracted to the positive energy that emanated from this individual, but the only admiration he desired was that of a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, at which he excelled beyond our wildest dreams.
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.” Robert Frost.
Sleep well Dad, all your promises were kept.
Join us on August 21, 2025, 5 pm- 8 pm, at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw St., to celebrate Dave O’Leary, there will be a private family memorial at a separate time.

August 13, 2025 at 10:13 amWe would like to express our gratitude to the many caregivers who took such loving care of him in these last several years, at his home and at Red Cedar Lodge. Your love, compassion, and simple fist bumps gave him everything he needed and the dignity he deserved! For that we are eternally grateful.

August 13, 2025 at 11:05 amI looked up in the dictionary the definition of “Classic”. No surprise, Dave’s photo was there. A true gentleman, sharp wit, love of life. May we all pattern our life on those great qualities. I will miss our lunches. God speed.

August 13, 2025 at 12:36 pmI met Mr. O’Leary years ago at Lansing Rotary. I adored him instantly. I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile and twinkle in his eyes. He was kind and engaged. It was years later that his daughter and I worked together and his daughter-in-law and I share a mutual friend. Thankfully, I was able to hear funny stories and know how he was doing. Goodbye to a sweet man!

August 13, 2025 at 2:35 pmI would like to say how sorry i was to hear of his passing. One of the more difficult things that happened to me growing up is when my Stepfather and Mother relocated us to California away from my Grandma, Uncle Dave , Aunt Janet and all my great cousins. Most of all I missed all the laughter and closeness of my extended family. Although, watching him from a far I can say that I still benefited as he was a great role model to me even at a distance.

August 13, 2025 at 6:27 pmHe hired me over 50 years ago. There are other loyal O’Leary employees that were there when I started and are still loyal members of the O’Leary Paint family. How many people can say they love their boss? You can find a lot of them who worked for him. I will always be in debt to him for he provided for me and my family and gave me great opportunities. Looking forward to seeing you again in heaven.

If there ever was a wit I admired and a friendship I cherished it was Dave O’Leary. Our long friendship was cemented by honest sharing, a more than occasional character affront delivered with a smile and his ever beaming “leprechaun” demeanor. I will miss his wisdom,
his wit and his warmth. Though he will be absent he will never be gone. God speed David.

August 15, 2025 at 9:14 amDave had ALWAYS been a supporter of mine in my CATA CEO role. We kept up that friendship throughout years in Rotary! He was lovingly “picked on” and always had a quick wit response that kept us all laughing. Dave will be missed but we wish him God Speed. Rest in beautiful peace!

August 15, 2025 at 9:58 pmIt was an honor to have known David, who lived with purpose and grace. During my time at the Lansing Board of Water and Light, I witnessed firsthand his invaluable contributions as a Board Member. His leadership, generosity, wit, and unwavering kindness left an imprint not only on the organization, but also on the broader community he served so faithfully.
I will always remember the way he valued differing viewpoints, never dismissing another perspective. With respect and wisdom, he would often say, “Let’s agree to disagree,” gently reminding us that mutual respect was more important than winning an argument. With deep gratitude for the privilege of knowing such a kind and faithful man — may he rest in peace.

August 16, 2025 at 6:59 amHow heartbreaking that another Lansing icon has left us. I had the pleasure of working with him on several projects over the years. No one could match some old, obscure paint color like he could. He was funny, incredibly helpful, and deeply kind. A gem. Rest easy, Mr. O.

August 16, 2025 at 9:35 amUncle Dave was there throughout my life,
Not a huge presence but at all times in sight.
Our visits were rare but always a treat,
He made me smile whenever we’d meet.
Uncle Dave always had a wisecrack or a quip,
But that never hid an intellect sharp as a whip.
His business acumen was second to none,
From Silver Lead to O’Leary Paint, and beyond.
Uncle Dave was devoted to his wonderful wife Janet,
She and his kids rank with the best on the planet.
His bond with my father was truly indestructible,
They stood tall together when most would have buckled.
Although I will miss him nearly twenty-four seven,
I smile because Uncle Dave is with Janet in heaven,
Robert Roche
August 16, 2025 at 9:55 amI am so grateful for my association with Mr. O’Leary. He was always such a delight and our families time with the O’Leary family, in town or on vacation, at work or at play, is so full of awesome memories that mere words here could do them no justice.
Thank you for writing this fabulous tribute to his memory. As I read it I kept nodding my affirmation that the uniqueness of the tribute fit.

August 17, 2025 at 9:28 amYou have my deepest sympathy. Dave was, along with my husband Jim, one of the Lansing group of Notre Dame lifelong fellow students and friends. The last of The Great Generation. I believe they are looking down at us with their everlasting smiles and love.

August 17, 2025 at 12:02 pmDave Sr. is the reason I was able to establish a long time career in the Paint business.
He has always been supportive and appreciative along the way. His smile was contagious and his humor would resonate in your mind for days. Impossible not to Love this man. RIP Big Guy.

August 17, 2025 at 8:45 pmWhat a wonderful obituary that perfectly captures Dave! He was a dear friend of my mom and dad for decades. He regularly visited my mom while she was in hospice and through her dementia she always remembered his name and her face lit up in a smile when she saw him. I’m grateful for his wit and his humor, but also for his civility, warmth, compassion and kindness. Condolences to all those who knew and loved him.

August 20, 2025 at 10:20 amDavid was my confirmation sponsor. He was a cousin, his mother was my grandmothers (Dency Cook’s) sister.
He was gracious and generous with welcoming thoughts and comments. Always made you feel welcome, appreciated and respected. I always looked forward to seeing and be with him. We have livered around the county outside of the Lansing area for years but he and Janet were never out of our minds and prayers. Great people, great family and trusted friends.
I know he will be missed and trust that he is in heaven with Janet and his family around him
God Bless him, rest in peace, I know he will.

August 20, 2025 at 2:43 pmDave and I enjoyed many times together. We met in Lansing Rotary years ago and were close friends. He & Janet invited me to many events at the Lansing Country Club and I introduced him to the University Club where we celebrated many of his birthdays. His life is a model for all, and his family summed it up nicely in the obituary. He will be missed but the memories will sustain us.

August 21, 2025 at 3:28 pmI met Dave at Rotary, he nominated me for President and when I was elected he told me not to embarrass myself ( doesn’t that sound like him).
We served on the Capitol National Corporate Board. He was such an asset with very sage and thoughtful input.
More important he was a friend! God bless you Dave and your family!

August 22, 2025 at 7:52 amI have had the privilege and pleasure to work for the O’Learys for 42 years. I was hired by Dave Sr.
What a great guy! For me all of my memories are how witty he was and he always made others around feel good about themselves. He always had a story for what ever the topic of conversation was!
And those stories were not just funny but purposeful!. I am very proud to have been a very small part of this O’Leary paint company and it all started with that interview with Dave O’Leary in 1983!
