Dan A. Magistro

Magistro, Dan photoLansing

Born August 12, 1956.  Born into Eternal Life September 20, 2017.

Dan lived his life large. He loved to laugh, have fun and was proud of his Italian heritage. He loved to cook. He loved to talk and could converse on many subjects. He kept his wit and good humor right up until the end.

Dan was most proud of his U of M degree and that he fulfilled his mother’s wishes that all her children would graduate from college. He used his degree as a youth counselor at Highfields.

He lived many places and had a variety of jobs but Lansing was his home and the city that he loved. Foster Street was his pride and joy. The house became a showplace for Dan’s intuitive mechanical, electrical and carpentry skills.

He was friendly and outgoing with everyone he met and loyal to his family and friends.  We will cherish Dan’s spirit and love of life forever in our hearts. May he rest in peace.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Donato and Rose Magistro.  He is survived by his siblings, Mary Ann (Larry) Bengtsson, Cathy (Bob) LaTour, Margaret (Ralph) Spyker, Michael (Ginger) Magistro and Amy (Jim) Kraus, best friend Jason Mendiola, best dog ever Snowflake, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family would like to acknowledge Dan’s last surviving uncle, Guy (Ludy) Verderese, and Marco (Linda) Zea, who mom and dad lovingly referred to as their other son.

The Family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to Dan’s angels on this journey: Becky Loomis R.N., McLaren Hospice, Gary and Tori Steffy, and our cousin Toni Hornberger for her compassionate care for Dan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Bob Irish at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2017, at the Church of the Resurrection, 1505 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 28th from 5-8 p.m. at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, 325 W. Washtenaw, Lansing and 10 a.m. at the church on Friday.  The rosary and the Knight of Columbus Chalice Ceremony will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring his life with a donation to one of the following charities: to honor Dan’s dogs – Voiceless Michigan or Karen Hartwig Foundation; to honor a cousin’s son – Families Against Narcotics Ingham County; to honor where we all started – Resurrection School.

Arrangements are entrusted to Estes-Leadley Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.EstesLeadley.com.

As you gather together at the table with family and friends, lift your glasses to honor one who lived life to the fullest. Then in recalling favorite stories, give tribute to the guest of honor who sits, still at your board.

Dear Magistro Family.

I’m so happy to have been a friend of Dan’s. He took me in as his roommate when I was in a tough spot in 1978. I’ll never forget that.

God Bless You All.

Dear Magistro Family…my heart goes out to you. I saw Dan last when I stopped near his home for a garage sale. He came over to me with full smiles and was very funny…witty and full of life. He had a good memory about the past…we had a wonderful conversation. I will remember him laughing and joking with me. Blessings on your journey Dan****

The Magistro family,

My deepest sympathy for the loss of your family member, Dan. I was so happy to have had an opportunity to visit with Dan about 4 years ago. We had a lengthy conversation sharing information about our families catching up on many years of absence. Talking with him brought back a flood of memories and made me realize how much I miss you all. I will not be able to attend his funeral but you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
