Charles J. Lay

Charles J. Lay, 92, of Holt, MI, formerly of Leslie, MI, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2018.  Charles “Charlie” graduated from Mason High School in 1943; was a WWII veteran serving with the Merchant Marines; proud member of the Leslie American Legion Post #491; he was a lifetime Master Freemason; his many services to the Leslie community included Lions Club member, Fire Chief, and City Constable.  He enjoyed golf, fishing, and bowling, with his favorite times being spent with family and friends.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Freda (Freeman).  He is survived by his children:  Pat Booker of Wittmann, AZ, Chuck (Margaret) Lay of Holt, and Jon Michael (Vickie) Lay of Seffner, FL; three grandchildren, Harry Lubahn, Charley Lay, and Janie Pott; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Per Charlie’s wishes, there will be no services.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Leslie Community Outreach, 614 Mill St., Leslie, MI 49251, or the Leslie American Legion Post #491, 422 Woodworth St., Leslie, MI  49251. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

My earliest memory of Uncle Charles is his laugh and patience with a little girl who couldn’t remember “Bosco” without it coming out “Popsicle.” He was always kind. My heart is with you all in the face of losing this good man.
