Carl R. Westerhof

Carl Richard Westerhof, age 90, of Holt, Michigan, called to his eternal home on April 11, 2021.  He is enjoying unlimited ice cream and peanuts in his heavenly home.

Carl was born November 21, 1930, in Grand Haven, to the late Elmer J. and Margaret (Salisbury) Westerhof.  He graduated from Grand Haven High School.  After proposing on the Grand Haven City Beach, he married Dorothy Ann Sheffield on March 26, 1953.  They recently celebrated their 68th Anniversary.

Carl worked at Diamond Reo and retired from the East Lansing Post Office after 26 years.  For a second job, if you call it that, he worked all the home Michigan State University football, basketball and hockey games for over 50 years, witnessing several victories and championships.  He was an avid Spartan fan!

Carl was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Holt for over 50 years.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his garden, camping, walking the Grand Haven Boardwalk and making apple cider.  He, along with his father and sons, built a cider press and every fall, they made and gave away gallons of cider.

Carl is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Richard (Mary Kay) of Mason, Donald (Carol) of White Heath, IL, and Marikay (Kurt) Teremi of Lansing.  He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Sarah (Jeff) Backerman, Matthew (Jen) Westerhof, Leanna (Kurtis) Duemler, Samantha Teremi, Kendal Westerhof, Emma and Mason Backerman; and sister-in-law, Pat Westerhof.  Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer in 2018.

A celebration of his life with his family will take place at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Holt.

We have so many fond memories of Carl, we vacationed together many times, had ice cream wherever we were, our kids were best friends, just a great man who will be truly missed by all.

I remember Carl in the Memory Care Home in Holt as I had a loved one there. I would have my dog with me sometimes and I always put him in Carl’s lap, he loved dogs. Thinking of you Dorothy! I had Tom there,we lost him September 2019. I had moved him to a Memory Care Home in Charlotte and he went down fast. They are no longer suffering from this horrible disease.

What a beautiful memorial! He sounds like such a great guy. I’m good friends with Don, who has such a great laugh and great heart! I see that smile in his dad! Praying for your family. Love you all!

Keeping you all in thoughts and prayers. So many years of great memories of Carl and the entire Westerhof family. Church camping trips or just randomly being in the same campground at the same time-always a good time together. I think of the apple cider every time I drive past the house in Holt and smile, making that made him smile l. Prayers of comfort and peace as you make this journey without Carl, but knowing he is always watching over you.

May God guide and comfort Carl’s family. Carl was truly “gentle “man and always treated everyone he met with kindness and respect. I can picture him taking tickets at the pearly gates> always with a smile and saying “welcome”
