This was a complete shock. Bryan and I worked together at WJIM and have been in constant contact until a week ago when I was out of town for my grandson’s wedding. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Mr. Halter was always so independent! He was a neighbor and we are so sad about this. I hope to one day be as strong as he was. such an inspiration.

I remember Bryan well in the mid-1960’s when I was just getting started in radio.. A gentleman with style, respectful of others… including those who couldn’t quite measure up to his high standards. He was always helpful to everyone and will be remembered fondly. Tim O’Brien, ABC News Supreme Court & Legal Affairs Correspondent 1977-2000.

I only knew, and worked for Brian, via Denny Krolik in the radio news department for five years (1980-1985), but he never had an unkind word to say to me and was always a lot of fun when he came back to the studios. He was always great to talk to at WJIM Breakfasts later on since I learned much more about the creation of the stations and the Countryhouse. He seemed to always have the right strategy for what was programmed, although I only saw a little part of it. I had come from being a PD at a small AM station at the time so to handle a big city market like WJIM for all those years and all those duties would have been quite a challenge but he did it.

Shocked and saddened to hear about Bryan (saw him early Saturday morning to drop off a few groceries). His Central United Methodist family are going to greatly miss Bryan. Bryan has been such a faithful member, and done so many things over the years for his Church. We will especially miss his friendship.
Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.

I was saddened to hear of Bryan’s passing, like so many others. I last talked with him only a couple of weeks ago. He was deeply involved in our church, Central United Methodist… he loved our church and everyone in it. He did so much to support our church in so many ways, making sure that we continued to grow and stay strong.

I recently worked very closely with Bryan as our church celebrated its 3,000th consecutive radio broadcast over WJIM-AM in June. Bryan was the person that put that first broadcast on the air back in 1962. The radio ministry was so important to Bryan – he felt a lot of pride having been the person that initiated that, with it still going strong today. He always felt that this was the reason that the Lord sent him to Lansing.

I spoke of Bryan on last Sunday’s radio broadcast – Mary & Dave Jessup and Dottie Stark are sponsoring radio broadcasts on September 6th & 13th in Bryan’s memory – so many people loved Bryan and will miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My sincere sympathies to the entire family of Bryan Halter, Jr. (That’s Bryan with a Y.) I met Gail and Sherry at the time of the funeral service of their mother Gwen, Bryan’s sister. Both Gwen and Bryan were active and dedicated members of the church family of Central United Methodist Church in Lansing.

Bryan will be missed. He participated and worked on behalf of the church in many endeavors; the obituary mentions many, but there were even more. He had his favorite pew in church and we just always expected him to be there. His goal was to live to be 120, but he certainly accomplished much in his 86 years. We are indebted to him for his faithful stewardship and his friendship.

Bryan hired me in 1969 at WJIM radio from Greenville, MI. I will always have fond memories working for Bryan. He called me about a month before he passed and we talked about ten minutes. He was a remarkable man and a wonderful boss. I will always cherish the time we were together. Great memories at the Country House! (WJIM)

We are so shocked and saddened by Brian’s unexpected death! He was a prince of the church, a thoughtful and brilliant thinker, always courtly and gentle. He was devoted to Central UMC and wonderful worshipper. We shared a love of cats, and so read his weekly statistical report every Sunday afternoon. He is irreplaceable in the church and world. We will miss him very much. Rev. Linda and Bill Farmer-Lewis

Thank you so much for your wonderful message. It’s comforting to see how much he was loved and appreciated by the church. We want to have a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life for him sometime. However, it’s hard to know when to do it safely due to COVID.

Sincerely,
Sherry Doney (niece)

As a fellow student in high school, we called him Bud. The byline by his senior picture said. “the next voice you hear””—which was an indication of his future profession. Bud was an honor student and a member of the school newspaper and yearbook staffs. I remember him as a very pleasant fellow. My sympathies to his family and friends.
