Betty Liebum passed away peacefully on Friday, December 16, 2011, in Colleyville, TX. Betty will be returning home to be with her parents in her beloved Michigan. She was a caring, kind, loving lady. She was born on October 15, 1931 in Lansing, MI and was the daughter of Eliad Arthur “Art” and Gladys Bovee. Art was the VP of Motor Wheel-Duo Therm Division. Betty was the granddaughter of Frank N. Bovee, one of Lansing’s first aldermen.
She was a member of St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church in Williamston where she played the organ in her teenage years. She graduated from Lansing Eastern in 1949 and went to college at Michigan State University. Betty was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.
She became an executive secretary at Motor Wheel (Lansing) and General Dynamics (San Diego, CA) and later a VP of the Loan Division of People’s Savings & Loan (Battle Creek, MI). Betty moved to Texas in 1995 to be closer to her children and grandchildren, although Michigan, with its four seasons of contrast, was never very far from her thoughts. She had many happy memories of summers at Lake Missaukee; she loved the lighthouses that lie on the coast of Lake Michigan and the lilac trees of Mackinac Island.
Betty’s family had served in the Spanish-American War, World War II and the Vietnam War. Service to one’s country was very important to her and she was very knowledgeable about this history.
The family will particularly miss her at Christmas because, for her, it was a time of the year for giving to those in need, especially children.
She was preceded in death by Arthur and Gladys Bovee and her sister Roberta “Bobbie” Bridges. Betty leaves behind her loving and adoring family, son Chris Liebum and wife Laurie of Katy, TX, daughter Lori Palmer and husband Cliff of Southlake, TX, granddaughters Meghan Liebum, a student at University of Massachusetts and Madalyn Liebum, a student at Southern Methodist University, grandsons Jacob and Zachary Pickle, students at Southlake Carroll High School, and their father David Pickle of Colleyville, TX and brother Frank Bovee of Carson City, NV.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at Deepdale Memorial Gardens in the mausoleum chapel. The family will receive friends at the mausoleum from 1:00 until service time on Wednesday. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
