Betty Jane Sweitzer

Age 92, of East Lansing, MI, died peacefully on November 27, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.  Betty was born in Lansing to George H. and Goldie Kimble Miller.  She loved to tell of her childhood years during the Great Depression, living on a small farm near Dansville, attending a one-room school.  Later she returned to Lansing and graduated from Central High School (Class of 1939) at the age of 16.

Betty and Robert “Bud” Sweitzer were married in 1955.  For many years, she sold real estate in the Lansing area and was delighted when she found the exact home that would suit her clients. After she retired, she volunteered at Donley Elementary School in East Lansing, continuing until she was in her late eighties.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed gardening, needlework, crossword puzzles and cooking for family and friends.  She was in good health and active almost to the end.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Sweitzer.  Also surviving are her children: Roger Blackmar, Suzanne Blackmar Blanchard (Charlie), Kurt Sweitzer (Teri), Mark Sweitzer, Paul Sweitzer (Shan); and her beloved grandchildren: Kevin, Jerry and Kelley Sweitzer.  Also surviving is her brother, George H Miller (Sue) and a special friend, Doris Asher.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Roberts McDonald.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

I have been Betty’s next door neighbor for many years — she became a close friend and my second mother! How I shall miss her! Her inviting me to visit for Sunday night dessert became quite a tradition between us. My sincere condolences to her children, grandchildren and extended family. She was one of the good ones!

Betty served the children and teachers at Donley Elementary School where I was a teacher for many, many years. During two of those years, I had the privilege of teaching and learning from Betty’s grandchildren Kevin and Kelly. As a volunteer, Betty loved reading with kids, but she also loved taking a moment or two to chat with the teachers 🙂 She was a doting Grandmother to Kevin and “the twins”. She would simply light up every time she spoke of them and always expressed the joy they brought to her life. When I learned that my daughter was having twins, she shared some valuable wisdom and advice. But mostly, she took the time to always inquire, and she made me feel as though she deeply cared about my response. She was a wonderful lady, one I will not forget. My deepest condolences to the family. I assure you, she loved you dearly.
