Bertha “Jean” Metzger

Born on December 29, 1926, in Detroit, MI.  Passed away on June 24, 2017, at age 90.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Omer, in 2004.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Known by friends and family as Jean, she and her husband, Omer spent the majority of their years living in Newaygo, MI on Brooks Lake. They enjoyed boating, fishing and traveling to the upper peninsula, exploring small towns and visiting lighthouses throughout the state.  They loved taking annual color tours where they would spend time in Frankfort, their favorite place along Lake Michigan.  Jean spent many years as a volunteer reader for the Michigan Library for the Blind.   She was recognized for service by Governor James Blanchard and President George H. Bush.   Jean was a homemaker who enjoyed canning, baking, quilting and various sewing projects.   For many years she participated in the Newaygo County Fair, and in 1981, she was honored as the Newaygo County Woman of The Year.   Jean was a loyal member of Delta Presbyterian Church in Lansing.

Jean is survived by her 3 children, Jim (Mary) Metzger, Diane (Gilbert) LaHaine, Joyce (Jack) Ruttan; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.   At Jean’s request, there will be no public service.
