Anna Catherine Stephens

Anna Catherine Stephens – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother – passed away peacefully September 10, 2025.  Born June 7, 1928 to parents John Henry Meyer and Eunice Marie (Evers) Meyer, she was the youngest of five siblings.

She was a 1946 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School; attended Michigan State University and after raising her family worked several years for the State of Michigan’s Board of Licensing and Regulation.

She met the love of her life, Douglas, through the youth group at Mount Hope Methodist Church.  They wed October 14, 1949 and enjoyed 72 years of marriage before Doug’s passing in 2021.

Anna maintained deep connections with lifelong friends, predominantly from school and church.  She was actively involved in church committees and women’s circle functions, enjoyed playing bridge, participated in a golf league, enjoyed gardening and was an enthusiastic supporter of MSU football and basketball.  In retirement, she volunteered at Sparrow Hospital’s gift shop—eventually serving as store manager — and contributed her time to The McCree House.

Anna and Douglas shared a deep love for music and theater, including singing in their church choir. They traveled extensively as well, particularly in retirement.

Above all else, Anna cherished her faith and her family. She found great joy in supporting her children and grandchildren in their endeavors throughout the years.

Anna is survived by her children David (Rochelle) Stephens of Lambertville, MI; Julie Traver of Williamston, MI; grandchildren Sarah (Nick) Sheridan, Sean (Monica) Traver, Kyle Stephens, and Eric Stephens, great-grandchildren Beau, Sloan, Heath, and Summer Sheridan.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas, her parents, and her siblings Warren Meyer, Evangeline Lambert, Florence Hostetler, and J. Darrell Meyer.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at StoryPoint Abbot Park and CorsoCare Hospice for their compassionate care during Anna’s final days.

A memorial service for both Anna and Doug will be held October 14, 2025 at Central United Methodist Church (215 N Capitol Ave, Lansing, MI 48933).  Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.  The memorial service will commence at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Linda Farmer-Lewis officiating, followed by a luncheon at the church.  A private graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in honor of Anna and Doug may be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) or Special Olympics of Michigan.

Deepest sympathies to the Stephens family. Anne was a lovely, gracious woman. Raised a stellar family and was a faithful Methodist all her life. She was a blessing to this world.

Dave and Anna were the parents of my great high school friend, Dave, and often allowed Dave to have our friend group congregate in their home. They were always welcoming and gracious and clearly enjoyed the company of the younger generation. Looking back, I realize how lucky we were have a home like theirs to socialize in. (Doug also played a mean game of tennis. He and my dad were, I believe, undefeated against Dave and myself in doubles.)

My Aunt Anna was a wonderful and kind person, as was her husband, my Uncle Doug. It was always so special to spend time with them and my cousins, Dave and Julie. Growing up, family trips to visit them and my Grandparents in Lansing was always so much fun. Doug and Anna attended our wedding and I was very happy that my wife Debbie got to meet and spend time with them. I will always cherish my time with Anna and Doug. You couldn’t ask for a better Aunt and Uncle.
