Dear Mrs. McGuire,

This is Paul Fortino from your 4th Grade at St. Michael’s School in Grand Ledge (back in 1972).

You crossed my mind today and I was saddened to find out that you left this life at the young age of 85.

I would like you (and your family) to know that you inspired me more than you probably ever knew. I just wish I had reached out earlier to tell you personally!

I am well aware that I was quite the handful back then (still am), you had so much care and patience in helping me to find ways to calm myself, and carry on like a “good boy”. I will never forget the time when I was like one point away from getting a sticker on a test. I begged you, for longer than I should have, to make an exception and grant me the sticker. After some time of begging, you finally relented. I was so excited and grateful, that I reached out, grabbed your hand and kissed it – just as my mom was at the classroom door to drop off my lunch (which I forgot to bring to school) and saw the whole thing. In hind site, I think you and I were both likely as embarrassed as the other.

I have told this story so many times, as did my mom. It was a funny story that my family enjoyed teasing me about (having a crush on the teacher).

You were the best, and I enjoyed your class. I also enjoyed being able to come in to your classroom to help you set up at the beginning of the year. It made me feel special.

Perhaps one day, not so long from now, we will meet again and I will actually EARN that sticker… but don’t be surprised if I kiss your hand again anyway!

Condolences to your family. I hope I don’t get into trouble for telling my story.

Love,
Paulie
