Ann Marie Abbruzzese

Annie was born in 1961.  At that time Down Syndrome was not as open and accepted as in present day.  We were told as her family chances of her becoming a teenager were slim.

Our sweet Annie worked to prove she could defy the odds and did just that.

She started school when she was 4 years old and remained in special classes until she entered The Beekman Center. She learned to read, write, and general living skills.  During her many years at Beekman, she was active in everything offered her. This activity to include Christmas plays, Cheerleading, played in the hand bell choir also learning valuable living and personal skills.  She won 9 gold and silver metals competing in the Special Olympics for gymnastics, cheerleading, and Bowling.

The school arranged for her first job in the Hotel industry.  Working at Holiday Inn she cleaned rooms for guests, to include changing the bed, cleaning the bathroom and running the vacuum on the floors.  After 5 years, she was offered the opportunity to work in the food industry for L&L foods.  In a very short time of dusting shelves the store’s Deli Manager asked permission to give Annie a trial of learning the Deli operation.  She shined from day one, this move seemed to spark her motivation.  She loved her work and was proudly helping with product pricing, learning dips and salads.  At 19 Years, it was a very sad day when they had to stop her employment when the store closed.  She loved music (rock), college football, WWE, Big Bang theory, game shows, court TV, Bowling (on 2 leagues) and a party of any kind enjoyed her wine.

Family meant the world to her.  She has many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and one brother and sister.  As a family, we attempted to keep her life as active as time would allow.

Miss Annie was a Legend in her time.  Anyone privileged to have known her will agree.

Annie is survived by her brother, John (Terry) Abbruzzese, and her sister Mary Jo (Edwin) Jenks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Joanna Abbruzzese.

With Covid continuing to dominate our lives, there will not be visitation at Estes Leadley.  There will be a small service at the Chapel within Deepdale Memorial Garden, on Waverly, in Lansing, at 1:00 pm, Friday, December 17, 2021.  We are planning a “Celebrate Annie’s Life” memorial later next year, Location, date, and time to be established and announced at the time.  If you would like to share your comments about your relationship with Annie, you may do so on the Estes Leadley’s website or on FB.

We will ALL miss this incredible little lady.  Rest in Peace Angel.

My best memory was Annie’s toast at Nick and Libby’s wedding. All dressed up in her sparkly dress, charged up to the stage with her glass of White Zinfandel, grabbed the microphone and proclaimed….”To the new and improved Nick and Libby Abbruzzese!”

As only Annie could, she brought the house down! I love you Annie with all my heart!

I am so blessed that I had the incredible pleasure of knowing and sharing so many fun times with Annie. My absolute most memorable day was Nick and Libby Abbruzzese’s wedding. Annie knew it was going to be one heck of a party! She graced us with the most incredible “wedding toast” by honoring the “new and improved Nick and Libby Abbruzzese”. Her very own words! As the wedding music played and the dance floor crowded, we proceeded to do some incredible chair dancing moves, all led and choregraphed by non other than Ms. Annie Abbruzzese.
Many times spent with Annie was meeting up for lunch at Olive Garden, then a walk through Meridian Mall shopping. After hours of shopping, I would then invite her for a ride in my car. We would then open my sun roof, crank up the radio, and blast her favorite rock station. Without missing a beat, she sang every word at the top of her lungs!!
I love you, Annie. Keep dancing and singing until we meet again!

I am so saddened to hear about the loss of this precious woman. Annie went to Beekman with my brother Johnny, and our families connected not only through the school but through the life long friendship of my Father Jim Bancroft and her Uncle Ralph. Annie was full of life. She made family gatherings joyous, and memorable.
My whole family loved her so. Rest in peace sweet lady. God has received the perfect Angel, and I can’t wait to see you and my family again some day. Praying for the family during this difficult time.
Love

Annie and her Mom used to enjoy Bingo at Holy Cross (and several other halls). I knew her Mom through work so Jo and I always talked to each other at these gatherings. Annie became one of my favorite friends. She was such a sweetheart. I always took a bag of candy to Bingo to share with other players. After several weeks Annie let me know her favorite was a PayDay candy bar. After that I was always sure I had a PayDay bar in my bag for Annie. She was a sweet, happy wonderful lady. Since the local Bingo halls have closed I have missed seeing her.
Fly high Annie! Spread your joy and humor throughout Heaven.

John, So sorry to hear of Annie passing. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking how proud your mom and dad were of her. I am sure we will all meet her again. Best wishes to you and your sisters families. Mike from the old Dan O’Shaughnessey days. Where did the time go?

John, my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting your sister when we were guests at your home helping to celebrate your daughter’s graduation. We remember your sister to be a very sweet person and are so sorry to learn of your loss.

Ann was the star of our Beekman Special Olympic Cheerleading team, she was beautiful in the choir, and on the bells. She inspired her classmates to excel. What a special human being. Her parents raised her so well, I will never forget our trip to the International Special Olympics, as our Cheerleaders were the stars of Opening Ceremonies. The Japanese team and other countries followed Ann and her teammates everywhere. She was a heroic individual. We will miss her so! Claire (Murphy) Kzeski

Dearest Ann ~~
Happy heavenly Birthday – #62!!!
I’ve been thinking about you ever since the anniversary of your transition, last month, and I was sitting here today thinking something just didn’t feel right about today (New Years Day), and that’s when I realized that since you’ve been gone, many occasions are just not the same… Birthdays, Mothers Day, Easter, July 4, Thanksgiving, occasionally Christmas and almost always New Years Day, your Birthday!!!
I still remember on Mothers Day 2021 when we brought you to aunt Bobbi’s, and at first you were quiet and not totally “yourself,” but when Bob began to play your music it was as if the light came on, and I don’t think you even stopped dancing! It was so wonderful to see you dancing and loving every minute of it! Wrestling -WWE, Music, shopping, wine, and family get-togethers of any kind were always your thing. I love you and miss seeing you enjoy your favorite things, but mostly miss sharing your joy on many of these occasions. If you can “hear” me I only hope you know how special you were and how much you are missed. We love you, always.
