Anka Baecker

Williamston, Michigan

Anka (Brüninghaus) Baecker was born December 15, 1937, in Wilhelmshaven, Germany and passed away in her home in Williamston, Michigan on August 5, 2015.

Anka came to the U.S. in 1958 at the age of 20 to visit family and as luck would have it met her husband, Walter Baecker while in the U.S.  On July 15, 2015, they celebrated 54 years of marriage. Throughout the years there were many joys and sorrows that life can bring. In 1987 she was diagnosed with breast cancer but seemed to have conquered that hurdle with the grace and style that she handled everything with. In 2012 Anka and Walter lost their son, Andy, which was a loss that seemed impossible to overcome.  Her cancer came back after 28 years and she was not so lucky this go around with the monster that cancer is.  Anka loved her family, friends, and pets and could make anything in her garden grow and look absolutely beautiful.

Anka is survived by her husband, Walter, daughter Kathy (John Smith), daughter-in-law Francoise Baecker and grandchildren Alexander and Nicole.  She had many nieces and nephews that were very special to her.  Many thanks to her niece Cheryl Austin for the help and support over the last few days – you helped us make her last moments on earth comfortable and easy.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society.

Kathy and John — So very sorry for your loss. Words cannot express the grief and emptiness in losing your mother. She touched many lives and brought joy to her family! May the memories that mean the most to you live forever in your hearts, and may you know God’s grace and strength through this very difficult time.

I consider myself truly blessed to have had Anka as my mother-in-law.
She was so kind and so much fun to be around. Family meant everything to her, and she was the center of ours. She was a master gardener, and everywhere I look in our garden I see her-in the beautiful plants she gave us throughout the years. I will forever remember her this way-eternally beautiful inside and out. I miss her terribly.
