Alice Marie Crawley
Age 96, of Lansing, MI, passed away January 17, 2018. She was born August 7, 1921, in Howell, MI, to the late Frederick and Cecelia (Fitzsimmons) Hazelman.
Alice led a long life full of deep dedication to her work, community, and her family. As the old saying goes, Alice didn’t let a lot of grass grow under her feet.
Alice was involved in the Eagles Auxiliary for many years both as a President and past President. As an Eagles member, she spent many hours involved in Eagles activities.
She was a wonderful mother of three children. She has five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
As a young woman and into her older years, Alice’s claim to fame was volleyball. She was a fierce competitor and loved the game. She was referred to by her team mates as a great ‘spiker’. Finally, while in her early 60s, after an injury, she was told by her doctor that it was time to quit the game or suffer more serious injuries. Reluctantly, Alice retired from the game and regretted not being able to play.
For over thirty years Alice was employed by the State of Michigan, retiring from the Department of Treasury.
Alice was married three times in her 96 years to John “Jack” Sova, Jerry Steffy and Ivan “Ike” Crawley. All three husbands have predeceased her.
Until she was no longer physically capable, every Christmas Alice hosted a family Christmas party wherein she invited all family members to her home to enjoy wonderful food and gifts for everyone. Alice spared no expense to provide a joyful and spiritual event for her entire family. She even had Santa Claus there for the kids.
The family always knew that every year they could count on receiving birthday cards from mom and grandma. These memories will stay with her family forever as a time to rejoice and enjoy one another.
There was never a time when Alice did not step up to assist her family financially and emotionally. She was dedicated to the wellbeing and future of her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a dedicated matriarch of the family and her memory will be cherished forever.
Alice’s famous quote was “I’m a tough old bird.” Indeed she was until God finally called her home.
A graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2018, at Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Palliative Care, 2675 S. Cochran Charlotte, MI 48813 or the Fraternal Order of Eagles Women’s Auxiliary Aerie #1039, 4700 N. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.
