Aletha Mary Holmes

After three years of declining health, Aletha Mary (Bennett) Holmes (Mrs. William Holmes) died on February 8th, 2012 with family at her side in Goodyear, AZ. She was ninety-two years old. The Lord blessed her in that she was at Palm Valley’s Hospice of the Valley for only four days where she was lovingly cared for.

On March 17th, 1919, Aletha Mary Bennett was born to Charles Merle Bennett and Emma Bell (Redman) Bennett in Holt, Michigan. After graduation from high school, she married William S. Holmes. Together, they raised three children, William Jr., Richard and Kathleen. Aletha was employed as a Cost Accountant at John Bean Corporation of Lansing, Michigan. She was an active member of Holt Presbyterian Church where she was elected as the first female Clerk of the Session.

After retirement, Aletha and husband Bill enjoyed many years traveling with their “Camper Club”. Then, summers were spent in Michigan and winters at Rainbow Village RV Park in Zephyrhills, Florida, where they enjoyed the friendship of many wonderful people. Aletha was always ready for a game of cards, bingo or scrabble. Aletha was also found volunteering her services and acted as treasurer for many of the park’s events.

Aletha was preceded in death by her parents, her brother – Edward Bennett, her husband – William (Bill) Holmes and her son – William M. Holmes. She is survived by her son – Richard Holmes (Janet) of Goodyear, Arizona and daughter – Kathleen (Holmes) Tretter (Jerry) of Lomita, California. She has seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel on Cedar St. in Holt from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church of Holt, 2021 N. Aurelius Rd., with the Rev. Kirk R. Miller officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Holt Presbyterian Church in memory of Aletha Holmes.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Ana Stan (Ariel, aka Cookie) for the loving care at Pleasant Valley Assisted Living and to Pastor Don and Janet Gundy for their special love and ministry to her.
