Jean M. Churn passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the age of 74. She was born July 13, 1936 in Washington, DC, the daughter of James and Virginia Von Hagel. Jean attended John M. Clayton High School before graduating from Caesar Rodney High School in Wyoming, Delaware, in 1954. She received her Bachelor’s degree in 1971 and her Master’s in 1973, both from Michigan State University. Jean was a retired special education teacher, and spent three years teaching English in Otsu, Japan. She was a member of MARSP and SERA, and was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed music, and played church organ. Surviving are her husband of fifty-four years, J. Thomas Churn; sons, James T. Churn and David (Lorianne) Churn; grandchildren, Alexander, Ryan, and Pam Churn; sister, Margaret Mayo; aunts, Gerry (Grant) Lapham and Eleanor (Al) Ward. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2011, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with the Rev. William J. Amundsen officiating. Inurnment will take place March 15, 2011, at Barratt’s Chapel Cemetery in Frederica, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Capital Area Humane Society or Washington National Cathedral.
