Alan Robert PosnerAlan Robert Posner, of East Lansing, Michigan, Associate Professor Emeritus of Political and Social Science at Michigan State University, died on July 13, 2024, in Lansing, Michigan. He was born in Washington, D.C., on February 17, 1942. He is predeceased by his parents, Irving Posner and Ruth Fix Posner, of Rome, Italy, and Rochester, New York. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Harriett Obermaster Posner; his son, Jake Posner, and daughter-in-law, Alexis Feuerborn; his daughter, Rachel Posner, and son-in-law, Jason Weiner; and his grandchild, V. Indigo Posner.

After high school in Rome, Alan graduated with High Honors in History from the University of Rochester and received a Master of International Affairs degree and a Ph.D. in Public Law and Government from Columbia University. While serving on active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, he taught liberal arts courses at the United States Naval Academy from 1967 to 1969. Alan taught at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and then at MSU from 1978 until his retirement in 2009.

There will be a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing, on Monday, July 15, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.  Donations in his honor may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, World Central Kitchen, the MSU Opera Program, or the East Lansing Public Library.

Sending heartfelt condolences to Harriett and her family. I am so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed my conversations with Alan in the office. He was upbeat & happy all the time with a big smile on his face. He will be missed.
