Helen (Bader) Shingler Martin, age 98, of Kewadin, MI, formerly of Grand Ledge, passed away on March 28, 2011 after a short illness. Helen was born in 1913 in Rosebush, MI, the daughter of Clarence and Lua (Calkins) Bader.
Helen graduated from Eastern High School in 1930 and graduated from Lansing Business University. She was employed by the State of Michigan in the Secretary of State’s Office in Lansing. In 1933 Helen married Emerson Shingler, who preceded her in death. In 1940, Helen married Wayne O. Martin M.D.
Helen was active in the Sparrow Hospital Medical Auxiliary from 1956 well into the 1980s, The Child Study Club, The Mother’s Club and Grandmother’s Club in Lansing. Helen was an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church and was a member of the Mayflower Circle until she moved to Kewadin in 2005. She was a caring and giving mother to her three children.
Helen was preceded in death by Emerson Shingler, Wayne O. Martin, M.D., daughter, LouAnn (Martin) Ward, son, Bob Martin, her parents and siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Janet (Fred) Zander of Kewadin, MI; grandson, Michael (Mitzie) Ward; granddaughters, Deborah (Jim) Gabrick, Dianna (Jim) Wright, Kristin (Pat) Ebert, and Michelle (Leigh) Howarth; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
A committal service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery on May 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Joy Baumgartner of Plymouth Congregational Church will preside. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Plymouth Congregational Church, Lansing, MI or Hospice of Michigan, 900 East Front Street, Suite 150, Traverse City, MI 49686.
