Ruth Meyer Polin

Ruth was born December 15, 1927, in Flushing, NY; she died June 29, 2017.  Ruth graduated from Barnard College (Columbia University) in 1948 and received her M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1950.  She was a research chemist prior to marriage to Donald Polin in 1954.  Ruth taught Chemistry in New Berlin, NY, Lansing Community College, and Michigan State University.  She changed careers in 1977 and became a reading specialist with The Institute for Research on Teaching at MSU, receiving an M.A. in Reading from MSU in 1981.

Ruth and her friend developed the RAL Report, a newsletter on Reading and the Language Arts, which they edited from 1983 to 1991.

She served as docent at Kresge Art Museum for a number of years and was a ceramacist in Green Valley, AZ, where she and her husband had a winter residence, and embroidered for many years.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Donald, in 2009.  Surviving are:  3 children, Barbara (Dana) Kolovson, Diane (David) Boone and Richard (Tammy) Polin; 6 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2017, at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing.  Memorial contributions may be sent to Congregation Shaarey Zedek in East Lansing, where Donald and Ruth were members for many years.  Arrangements by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

My sincere sympathies go out to the Polin family on the loss of your mother. Your parents were next door neighbors to my parents for 39 years in the Briarwood subdivision and very good neighbors at that. May the many memories of her and your dad ease your pain at this difficult time.
