My heartfelt condolences to the family.

When I joined the MSU faculty in 1973, Bob’s office was next to mine. I got to know him well, as we often conversed as we passed each other’s door. He was an outstanding forest economist; his accomplishments greatly enhanced the reputation of the Department of Forestry. He produced a legacy of PhD students who still serve the department with distinction.

Becky and I add our condolences as well.

I was one of Bob’s many graduate students. He was an outstanding teacher and an insightful thinker with a national reputation. Two of his graduate students convinced me that the best place to study forest economics was at MSU with Bob Manthy. He had extraordinary energy and encouraged all of us to be self-reliant. There were enjoyable times at Carol and Bob’s home, at the Homestead, and at Greentree Consultants. The late Lee and Janet James were part of this.

At Bob’s retirement a number of years ago, several of us wore our “Manthy’s Gerbils” T-shirts to highlight his occasional inability to call some of us by the correct name–we must have looked alike to him. It was a privilege to be his student and eventually his close colleague. He had a tremendous influence of my life, and I am thankful for what he made possible.

To Bob’s family – a hug and a my condolences

I was also one of Bob’s grad students (one of the Gerbils Larry Leefer’s mentions). I learned from Bob that research on forest policy and economics could be endlessly fastinating (I am still at in the Forest Service after 35 years). He introduced us to the (then new) Renewable Resources Planning Act that along with subsequent legislation has stimulated continuing research in the US Forest Service. I have now been part of RPA related research for more than 30 years. I appreciate very much what he taught, how he taught and his support for my work at MSU.

My condolances to Carol and family. Bob opened up areas of economic study I never knew existed. He involved me in research topics that were exciting and challenging. In short, he was everything a major professor is supposed to be. It doesn’t happen anymore, but Bob got me a summer job with the Forest Service in Washington, DC, with just a phone call. That really helped me get my career started after grad school. The world will miss Bob.
