Robert Scott "Bob" Hubbell

Age 61, IBEW JIW electrician, of Holt, MI, passed away in the company of his loving family on Friday, January 31, 2014. He was born on Sept. 23, 1952 in Muskegon, MI, the son of Raymond Harry and Mable Ruth (Davis).

The third son in a family of five boys, Bob found lots of adventures and enjoyed his childhood. Bob’s parents took annual family vacations that left a lasting impression on him, instilling the love of being with family and a desire to see the country. Bob became a hippie growing up in the 60’s; he adopted a rebellious, yet peaceful nature and a life-long love affair with music, especially Rock n’ Roll. He was a dreamer and a philosopher. He loved debating ideas and creative problem solving. He still respected his father though, so, when he was told to “get a haircut and a real job” he followed his dad and brother and joined the U.S. Marines who stationed him in California.

He enjoyed being out west, but after his time in the service he returned home to Muskegon where he met his former wife and mother of his children, Sandra Lynne (Ladnier). In 1976 they were married. The newspaper said ‘the Hubbell’s plan to travel’ and that is what they did. They lived in Austin, TX and then Gulfport, MS where they had their first son in 1977. Bob wanted to live in Boise, ID so they packed up his VW bus and moved there. They returned home, briefly, to give birth to a second son in 1979 before returning to the west. They lived in Denver, CO, Boise, again, and Ogden, UT. In 1981, Sandra became pregnant with their third son so, Bob made the decision to settle down near his family in Muskegon and earnestly pursue a career as an electrician.

He became a journeyman electrician in 1983, earned his master’s license shortly after and finally, his contractor’s license. He founded his own company Hubbell Electric and took his young sons to work. In 1985, they added a daughter to complete the family and moved to Twin Lake, MI.

Following a divorce, Bob returned to traveling and worked for the IBEW. He lived and worked all over Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan, making many friends from his union “brotherhood” along the way. He enjoyed his extended family. He briefly settled in Leslie, MI, providing a home for his rebellious teenage sons and allowing them time to adjust to life as young men. Providing a home and haven for family was most important to Bob. As his kids grew up and started their own families, Bob moved around, living with all of his kids and spending lots of time with his grandchildren. He loved his family most of all. His final residence was in Holt, MI with his son.

Bob is survived by his 3 sons, Jerremiah Austin Ladnier (Brandi) Hubbell, Jonathon Daniel Hubbell, Justin Matthew Hubbell; daughter, Jessica Rebecca (Brian) Borgman; 3 brothers, Thomas L. (Nancy) Hubbell, Dr. William J. (Mary Ann) Hubbell, Michael R. (Terri) Hubbell; sister-in-law, Aretta Hubbell; and 9 grandchildren, Austin Lee, Calvin Micheal, Madalynn Blue, Jonathon Boone, John Dezmond, Lila Mae, Sophia Timothy, Sadie Michael, and Micah Daniel. He was preceded in death by his brother Andrew P. Hubbell and his parents.

A memorial visitation will be held from Noon – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.

Some of my best growing up memories involve Bob and his brothers, Mike Tom, Bill and Andy. I haven’t been in contact for years with the Hubbells and I know Andy has also left this earth but I feel confident in saying I know that Bob left his mark. He was a free spirit second to none when we were youngsters and I sensee he carried the torch of Free Thought with him all his life. Condolences to his freinds and family RIP, Bob.

Aunt Dian and I were both sadden to hear of the passing of Robert. Our most sincere condolences to Bob’s soul mate; Sandy and to Bob’s family.
We were both so please to read the wonderful obituary written for Robert. The writer knew well, Bob’s background, his accomplishments and his ambitions.
Bob always had an internal drive for adventure and personal growth. His accomplishments were many and continuous.
May he now rest in peace knowing here on earth he will be remembered for a life-well-done.
