From the time I knew him in high school, Mike was a sweetheart of a man: good natured, generous, and with a great sense of humor. I was so happy to become friends again via Facebook. Despite the challenges he faced in recent years, his on-line time was spent connecting to others with his positive attitude and personal greetings for special occasions. I am so sad that I cannot be there in person to say a final goodbye and express my respect for him due to distance. My condolences to family and his close friends in Lansing who were so important to him.

I met Mike on 8.27.1982 at Dagwoods in Lansing. He has remained a close friend of mine ever since. I moved to Alaska in 1997 and for a few years we were only in touch on birthdays. Then Facebook came along and we got connected again. I enjoyed all his art and videos, his great sense of humor; but most of all, his friendship. I hoped he would be able to visit Alaska one day. He did get to enjoy the photos I would post, so he at least got a taste of it. He will live on in my heart forever and I look forward to meeting up with his spirit on the other side. My heart goes out to his family and wide circle of friends for I know he leaves a hole behind in us all. Rest well Mikey. Your legacy lives on.

I asked the funeral director to please read this as I cannot attend the funeral but would like say something about how special Mike’s friendship meant to me. I post it here in the guestbook for others to see:

I’m so sorry I could not be here to say goodbye to Doc Lewis, as I called him, one of the best friends of my entire life. I’ve only known two great pure souls in my lifetime, my mother and Doc Lewis. I met Mike in college and quickly became friends. We shared several apartments for many years. It was there at MSU that he and I undertook to learn the secrets of juggling and became juggling brothers for life. We were partners at the Peanut Barrell trivia night where we crushed peanuts and the competition while collecting many a wooden nickel for discounts on beer. He was the best man at my wedding in Las Vegas. In a time of raucus Rock and Roll he taught me the beauty of the classic musical films of our time. He and I enjoyed the same comic books and talked at length about them and other nonsense in general during late night phone sessions up until the last week of his incredible life. I loved him and will miss him greatly. Goodbye Doc.

Mike has been a friend for 40 years. I met him working at Brody cafeteria at MSU. He was funny and made shuffling dirty dishes the best job to have. Mike had a heart of gold keeping his friends close. I looked forward to his long phone calls and loved his mash up birthday cards on Facebook which always made you feel special. He was my link to faded friendships. He knew what was happening in everyone’s lives. Distance keeps me from being there on Wednesday. My condolences to his family and the many friends around the country that were as lucky as I was to call him their friend. I miss you Mike. Be at peace.

To the family of Mike Lewis,

I greet you in the name of the Lord. May the Holy Spirit comfort you during this trying time. We all mourn the loss of your loved one, Mike Lewis.

I first met Mike when I was an undergrad at Michigan State University. He achieved what many of us aspired to: gainful employment in broadcasting, an arena he loved dearly. He was all about quality and excellence in lighting and graphics creation.

Please know that your brother, uncle and friend was the sweetest, gentlest giant known in Lansing, Michigan! He inspired others with his infectious and wry sense of humor and irony. In the face of adversity, he journeyed onward. Because he blessed others, so his soul will be blessed.

Job well done, Mike Lewis. Peace be unto you.

Respectfully,

Krystal A. Fields

I doubt you could find anyone who did not like Mike. He was fun, kind and generous of spirit. We attended MSU together, being the same age, our birthdays only a few weeks apart. I also met Mike while working in the cafeteria in the Brody complex. Although I saw him only a few times since graduating, he kept in touch for 40 years and we shared our good times and our bad. We all know Mike was a big guy, but he had an even bigger heart.

Mike – you left us too soon! Our hearts are breaking and we will miss you every day.

My sympathies to all of Mike’s family and many friends.

I will always remember Mike as a friend with whom I could share my thoughts, He taught me that sometimes life gives you “freebies” and you just had to take advantage of them. We often talked about family, his and mine. I feel as though I know each and every one of his sisters and brothers, his nephew, his mom and dad and of course his grandmother – lemon cheesecake and all. Mike’s friendship was powerful. We regularly joked about being “a couple of slugs” taking on whatever life put in our path. I will continue to carry you, Mike, in my heart until we meet again – and you finally direct me in a movie. You promised, Mike. Go Spartie!!!

Thinking of my dear friend Mike and I already miss him very much. It’s wonderful to see all the posts of people testifying about what a wonderful person he was. Even though we didn’t get the chance to see much of each other over the last several years, I always knew he was there as my friend. I have so many good memories of Mike to hold on to. Back in the early 1980’s Mike helped me learn how to edit videotape at WELM. He was also the first person to take me to Dagwoods for their hamburgers. The nights at Emil’s I still remember well. And of course, he never forgot my birthday with one of his famous mock posters. Mike was truly a good friend.

My apologies to the family because I fear the road conditions will be too bad for me to travel to Lansing today for the services. That leaves my heart particularly heavy because I won’t be able to say good-bye. Rest in peace Mike.

I just learned of his passing and saddened to hear I missed the funeral as well. My prayers to his family. I will miss my dear “Berry”, which was the nickname I gave to him during our close friendship at MSU.

I have tried to reach Michael for weeks and just found this. I have been friends with Michael for 30+ years since we were together at MSU. I live in WA now and I guess no one knew how to reach me. I am so sorry to hear this and my best goes out to his family. He was talented, funny, knowledgable and one of my best life long friends. He will be in my heart forever. I miss him more than I can say. I love you Michael and always will. Blessing to his family, especially Lisa.
