Joanne Kathryn Blum Mettert passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on March 28, 2016 at her residence in Sanford, MI. Joanne Kathryn Blum Mettert was born in Ann Arbor on October 13, 1928 to Emmett Arthur and Maria Georgia (Osborn) Blum. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Lee Beer in 2012, and her loving husband William Burton Mettert in 2000.

She graduated from Saint Thomas High School, Ann Arbor in June of 1946, and earned her BA and MA in Education from Eastern Michigan University. She met William Mettert in Ann Arbor while attending Eastern Michigan University and they were married on June 12, 1948.

Joanne taught elementary school for the Garden City School District, retiring in 1988 with over 31 years of service. After retirement, Joanne and Bill shared time at their cottage in Gladwin, MI and in Cathedral City, CA. She moved to Sanford in 2003.

Joanne is survived by her four children: Timothy and Brenda Mettert of Rancho Mirage, CA; Marcia and Jack Zwemer of Franklin, TN; Patrick (Rick) and Marcia Mettert of Lansing; and Holly Hagadorn of Covina, CA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great- grandchildren, and her cat Emily.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Mary Cathedral, 219 Seymour Ave., Lansing with The Rev. Msgr. Bernard Reilly as Celebrant. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the Mass at the Cathedral. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906 or the Humane Society of Midland County, 4371 E. Ashman St., Midland, MI 48642. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Marcia & Rick: So sorry that you’ve lost Rick’s mother! You two certainly seemed like the perfect son and daughter-in-law–I’m sure you were both a great comfort to her in her final years….
