Jane Mary Armitage

(February 17, 1934 – December 19, 2013) Jane passed peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada with the comfort of her family by her side. Jane was born and raised in East Lansing, Michigan and studied art at Michigan State University.  She completed her degree at University of Calgary where she lived for many years.

Jane was the beloved mother of Virginia Purcell, Kathy Sisco, Patrick Edgington, Susan Edgington Ellam, Corrie Barling and devoted grandmother of Curtis, Jared, Torrie, Kyla, Casey, Cade, Connor, Teagan and Tyler.  Like her mother, Bessie (Frost) Armitage she had the grace and elegance of a lady. Like her father, Victor Armitage, she had the courage and resilience of a pioneer.  Jane is survived by her sister Elizabeth Armitage and was predeceased by her sister Joyce Nelson.

She was involved in many community groups including Chinook Artists, Calgary Community Painters, Holy Cross Quilters, and Skraskins Outdoor Club.  Her family and friends will remember her gentle spirit as an artist, her tenderness towards her pets and the comfort she found in a cup of tea or a beautiful garden.  She loved painting, classical music, English literature and history.  She was dedicated to helping those in need and inspired us with her quiet faith.  As choirs of angels welcome her home, we grieve our loss knowing that heaven has gained a beautiful soul.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 Ottawa St., Lansing on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. For those who wish, donations may be made to Kingston General Hospital Atrium Healing Garden.  You are invited to leave a condolence or share a memory of Jane via www.EstesLeadley.com

Both John and I were sorry to learn of Jane’s death. We all graduated from East Lansing High together in 1952. The “twins” were nice to be around and we have been sorry to have lost touch with them both over the years. Please accept our sympathy. Pam (and John) Irwin

I was also sorry to learn of Jane’s passing. Unfortunately I had lost track of the “twins,” but we all graduated from ELHS together. Jane & I were friends and over the years I would often think of her. Elizabeth, maybe you could drop me a line sometime. I’d love to hear from you. My deepest sympathy goes to all of Jane’s family and friends. Mary Hill

What a loss. Jane sat at the desk in front of me through high school art classes. My family lived near the Arnitage home and I enjoyed the friendship of Jane and Elizabeth for many years. Elizabeth you may reach me at 330 E. 1st Ave #230, Appleton, WI 54911. I hope that you will reach out to me. You have my sympathy. Sincerely, Joan

My deepest condolences. We were in many of the same classes at East Lansing High School, including Art, where we shared many hours of fun and learning. We also were on the set and design committees for the plays and dances. I am sorry to have lost track. I treasure her memory. Charles Figg
