James D. "Jim" Judge

Age 80, of Mason, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 25, 2011.

Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, from 1948 to 1952, aboard the USS Roanoke CL-145.  He told many stories of his shipmates and their adventures overseas.  He was member of the USS Roanoke CL-145 Association and the US Navy Cruisers Association.  He retired in April 1994, from the State of Michigan, with over 35 years of service.  He was also a member of Eaton Rapids Oddfellow Lodge #114, Grand River Valley Encampment #31 of Eaton Rapids, East Lansing Lodge #480 F&AM and Okemos Chapter #267 OES.  Jim loved all of the natural beauty created by his Lord.  He was the most happy when he was able to enjoy his time with family and dear friends “under the canopy of life.”  Most especially he enjoyed soaring with the magnificent birds that were his lifelong passion.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Barbara; a daughter and son-in-law, JaneMarie and Mark Andrew Butler (Holt, Michigan), 2 grandsons, Dennis James (DJ) and Mark Andrew II (Ionia, Michigan); a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Beverly Croy (Omaha, Nebraska); a sister-in-law, Janice Croy (Laingsburg, Michigan); and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2011, at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home for 1 hour prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests those who desire to make a contribution to the Oddfellow and Rebekah Camp for Campships (scholarship fund), c/o: Kathy Shary, secretary, Rebekah Assembly of Michigan, 405 Walnut Drive, South Lyon, MI 48178, or to a charity of your choice.

In about 1968, when I was a young forester with the Department of Natural Resources at Newberry, I met two men in a small pickup on a narrow road as I was heading home for the day. The driver rolled down his window as I drew alongside and asked whether I had seen any hawk nests. As it turned out, I had and he talked me into going back and showing him where it was. Of course, the driver was Jim Judge.
He was amazing — climbing a tree adjacent to the nest (to avoid leaving a scent trail on the tree trunk) and swinging on a rope into the nest tree. I kept records of nests for him and looked forward to his visits. We lost contact when DNR moved me from Newberry; I always thought I’d look him up in Lansing, but waited too long.
My condolences to family and friends he was one of a kind.
