Hilda Abood Kelush

During the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 13, 2011, Hilda reunited with all those loved ones who predeceased her.  They were: her husband, John Kelush; father and mother, Samuel and Nabeha Abood; stepmother, Sarah Abood; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Mitchell Nama; brothers, Hannibal (Carol) Abood, Fred (Pat) Abood, and Camille (Maryalice) Abood.

Hilda was born on July 23, 1923, and spent most of her life in Lansing.  She attended Lansing Schools.  After working for years in the family grocery business, she was then employed at High Class Beverage, MSU Federal Credit Union, and retired from the State of Michigan.

Hilda was a terrific homemaker with many cooking and baking skills, particularly in the preparation of several Lebanese dishes and pastries.  Nothing pleased her more than to share her cooking with family, friends and neighbors.  She was very generous in her attention to her church, St. Mary Cathedral, as a life-long parishioner, as well as to several other charities.  During her retirement she also volunteered assistance to the Surgical Waiting Room at Sparrow Hospital.

Hilda is survived by her loving daughter, Alberta Kelush of Fenton Michigan; brother, Richard (Jennifer) Abood of Lansing; other sisters-in-law, Patricia Abood, Sheila Abood and Maryalice Abood.  She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Our family is grateful to all those who gave love and attention to Hilda during her last years of suffering.  Particular appreciation must be given to her loyal and loving friend over several decades, Mrs. Louise Shaheen, who provided Hilda unparalleled caring.

The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011, at St. Mary Cathedral, with Fr. Bernard Reilly as Celebrant.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, located in downtown Lansing at the corner of Walnut and Washtenaw, from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, and at the church from 9:00 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Greater Lansing Food Bank or the Salvation Army.

To Hilda’s family-

My husband, Morris, and I were fellow swim partners with Hilda at Dwight Rich Middle School pool back in the 1990’s. We called ourselves the “Water Lilies”. We held several get-togethers after swimming at my house where we enjoyed ice cream as a reward for our exercising. Hilda was a dear person and we have fond memories of our fun in and out of the pool.

We offer sincere condolences to Hilda’s family.

Hilda and I became friends at the MAC, over 15 years ago. We loved splash water aerobics, and went for lunch after class, and often to celebrate our birthdays. I will miss her! She was such a lovely, classy lady. She was loved by so many in our class. My deepest sympathy goes to all her family, she adored them.

Sincerely,

Laura Hall

Hilda was a wonderful and kind woman. I too met her at the MAC. She used to come to the exercise pool in the afternoon. It was always nice to spend time with her. She is now free of the chronic pain that she bravely faced for so many days. And all of those for whom she cared so much have now got a special Angel watching over us.

I would like to offer my sincere condelences to the Abood family on the loss of your beloved Hilda. I am the Life Enrichment Coordinator at Clare Bridge where Hilda was a resident. I came to Clare Bridge in January and I wanted you to know that Hilda was the first resident that I made a connection with. We often spent time just the two of us, talking about our respective families. You all should know how much she talked of her love for you all. She mentioned her numerous nieces and nephews with great pride, her daughter Alberta, and her brothers, in particular Richard. Hilda was a special lady, with a great ear for listening, not passing judgement and offerring kind words of encouragement. I am truly greatful to have met her. I am again sorry for your loss and am glad she is finally at peace.
Sincerely
Lance Helton
