Herbert D. Shartle

Age 84, of DeWitt, MI, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 20, 2014. He was born September 26, 1929, to the late Herbert D. and Edna (Miller) Shartle.

Herbert graduated from Woodland (MI) High School and Michigan State University. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, during the Korean War. He married Beverly M. Grant on May 16, 1953. He was employed by the Employers Mutual Insurance Company, where he obtained his Certified Property and Casualty Underwriting certification and was branch manager of the King of Prussia office in Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly and his grandson Elliott. He is survived by his children, Susan Ashcraft of DeWitt, Kathryn Shartle of Lansing and Herbert W. (Karen) Shartle of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Adam, Kaitlin and Claire Newth, Meaghan Ashcraft, and Emma and Bryce Shartle, and his great-grandson, Byron Adam Newth.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2014, at Redeemer United Methodist Church, 13980 Schavey Rd., DeWitt, with the Rev. Dr. Rod Kalajainen officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel and beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lansing City Rescue Mission.

I worked with Herb at the Lansing Branch, I have very fond memories. He was always a gentleman. My sympathy to his family.
