Dwight "Bud" McEldowney

Lansing, Michigan

It is with the saddest of hearts that we announce the passing of Bud McEldowney on February 28, 2016.  Born Dwight Edward McEldowney on February 13, 1929, he grew up in the midst of the depression, living with his mother, father, and brother Earl, on Olds Ave. in Lansing.

He graduated from Lansing Technical High School in 1948 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball.  From there, he joined the army where he served overseas during the reconstruction of Germany after WWII.  When he returned stateside, he followed in his father’s footsteps and had a wonderful career at Oldsmobile for over 30 years.  He retired in 1982 and spent his retirement traveling the world, golfing, bowling, and spending time at the 701 VFW hall.  He was a man that lived his life to the fullest, and enjoyed absolutely every moment.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mottie (Bunch) McEldowney; wife, Bernice (Hall) McEldowney; and brother, Earl McEldowney.  Left to cherish his memory are his sister, June Spencer of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Brad (Laurie) McEldowney of Lansing; daughters, Lorrie (Andy) Fish of Bowie, MD, and Lisa Schneider of Holt;  grandchildren, Leah (Ryan) Porter, Jennifer Weldon, Jeff Weldon, Kristen Weldon, Amy Penny, and Andrew Marshall; six great-grandchildren; and his beloved cat, Boots.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.  Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Bud to the VFW National Home For Children in Eaton Rapids, MI, or to the Capital Area Humane Society.

To Lorrie, Andy and the rest of Bud’s family. We will always remember your Dad from the E9 trips we shared. Bud was one of those guys whom 10 minutes after you had met, you felt like you had known him all your life. Our heartfelt sympathy to all of you. May God hold you close in this time of healing.

To honor Bud’s wishes we are making a donation to the VFW National Home for Children in honor.

To Brad, Laurie and Leah: I know you spent a lot of time with Mr. McEldowney and there is going to be a huge void in your lives with his passing. I hope you are able to console yourselves in knowing that he knew how much you all loved him. My most heartfelt condolences.

I will always remember what an amazing and loving Grandpa Bud was to Leah. How much he loved all of you is so special. Aunt Laurie, you are especially thoughtful and I know you being a part of his life made it that much more fulfilled. While I only know Bud from being around on holidays and special occasions, he really was such a caring and special person. I’m sorry for your family’s loss, but I know that all of the years you had with him will make for great memories. Thinking about all of you.
