Arline Rose Roe

Arline Roe, age 98, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on March 10, 2015.  She was born on March 1, 1917 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and graduated from Grand Rapids South High School in 1934. Arline attended Grand Rapids Junior College for two years and transferred to Michigan State College to complete her BS degree in Home Economics. While working at the Lansing Ice and Fuel Company she met Russell Roe, her loving husband of 53 years.

Arline shared her many talents and services to her church and numerous volunteer organizations. For 73 years she was an active member of Central United Methodist Church serving in many capacities, not the least was helping establish the “Thursday Soup Kitchen.” Arline was recognized by Sparrow Hospital as a 50-year volunteer in 2009. Other associations included: Church Women United, Interracial Fellowship, Mobile Meals, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) and Community Volunteers for International Programs (C.V.I.P.). The Roe family was host to several foreign students and many have remained friends and part of the family for over 45 years. Further, Arline was a member of the MSU Alumni Association, the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and honorary member of the Lansing Exchange Club. In 1989, the City of Lansing honored her as recipient of the Carnation Award and Volunteer Service Award.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Karl Baessler and Emma Baessler; brother, Frederick Baessler; sister, Doris Baessler; husband, Russell L. Roe; and faithful friend and companion, Don Pickard. Surviving are her sister, Jane Doyle of Grand Rapids; son, James Roe (Rosemary) of Erlinger, KY; daughters, JoEllyn Roe of East Lansing, MI and Jerrie Lynn Gibbs (Ronald) of Portland, MI; six grandchildren, Jenifer Martinsen, Kimberly Burger (Matt), John Roe (Sherri), Christopher Roe Jennings, Amy Lynn Richburg, and Chad Brunton (Amanda); nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Bickford Assisted Living for the loving care they gave mother the past three years.

A religious service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2015, at Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol, Lansing, with a private interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Amundsen, the Rev. Linda Farmer-Lewis and the Rev. Steve Ezop officiating. Pallbearers will be John Roe, Christopher Roe, Chad Brunton, Kenneth Preston, Nicholas Cowles and Carson Roe. The family will receive family and friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Central United Methodist Church.

My prayers and thoughts are with Jerrie and her family. Mrs Roe was always warm and gracious to me in her home. She was part of my second family growing up.

The Roe’s were like my second family growing up. I am overwhelmed with so many memories at this moment. Arline was one of my mother’s life long friends. She was always so kind and generous. My condolences to the entire family.
