Arbutus M. “Boots” Halstead

(Oct 24, 1932 – April 10, 2013)

Arbutus “Boots” Halstead, 80, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, after an 8-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. She died peacefully to go to her Maker and be reunited with her beloved husband, Hal, of 56 years. Boots was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece and friend.

Upon her retirement from the MI Senate, Boots was able to travel extensively with Hal and enjoy their shared hobbies of attending MSU sporting events and Broadway shows, golfing, playing cards, summers at Shanty Creek and reading together. Boots volunteered for several groups, including the Sparrow Service Auxiliary (gift shop), which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Surviving are her daughters Leigh (Luigi) Luciani, Tamara (Dan) Pion, Julie (Robert) Koger; grandchildren Travis Tubbs, Tyler Tubbs, Lizabeth Luciani, Nicolas Luciani, William Luciani and Katlyn Wojtysiak; sister Jane McGregor, and many special nieces and nephews. Boots’ friends, while too numerous to mention, held a special place in her heart. She was preceded in death by her husband Hal, her parents, Carl and Florence DeJongh, and brother, Bob.

A memorial service celebrating Boots’ life will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Lansing, 510 W. Ottawa St., Lansing, MI 48933; with a gathering of family and friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eaton Community Palliative Care or First Presbyterian Church Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.

Leigh, Tamara & Julie,
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. And so close after your father’s death. I can’t imagine. Your family has always had a special place in our hearts. I fondly remember the many stops at your house enroute to my grandparent’s in Ithaca:-) Your mom looks great. My thoughts and prayers are with you. My dad is planning to attend the service. Best wishes, Linda & Family

I’m so sorry to hear about your Mother and the earlier passing of your Father. I don’t know if you will remember me or not. My parents were Bill and Pauline Town from Breckenridge, Merrill and Ithaca. I’ one of the twins. I so often wondered about your family, I was just thinking about all of you on Tuesday when we were in Lansing. My thoughts will be with all of you and your families in the days and months to come. As I remember you were a wonderful fun loving family. Mary
