Gary R. Powers

Lansing, Michigan.  Gary R. Powers joined his Jewish carpenter friend, Jesus, on August 29, 2012. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 18th, 1935 to Harry E. and Margaret (Ward) Powers.

Gary graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1954. He joined the Lansing Fire Department in 1962 and later earned his Associates Degree in Fire Science from Lansing Community College. He served as Vice President, Lansing Fire Fighters Local 421 of the IAFF. He retired after 26 years as Deputy Chief of Training. During his retirement, he traveled to several countries and throughout the United States, most recently wintering in Mesa, Arizona where he and Donna attended Velda Rose United Methodist Church.

He is known by those close to him as a prayer warrior and gave peace to many, as they knew they were in his daily prayers. His ministry also included calling those he prayed for, and checking in with them, a true showing of God’s love in his life.

He is survived by his wife Donna J. (LaValle) Irish Powers, brother Harry Lee (Sharyl) Powers, son Michael A. Powers and his wife, Deanna, who Gary loved as a daughter. Grandchildren Tim and Lisa Powers and their son, Michael II; Lindsey Powers and her daughter, Isabella, all of Lansing. Granddaughter Falaria Harvey of Florida. Step-son, Micheal Irish, Sr., and three children, Micheal, Jr. (son, Clayton); Nicole (daughters, Madilyn and Gabriella) and Stephanie of Holt. Step-daughter, Laura (Paul) Groll and children, Emily and Anna of Okemos.

The memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 1900 Boston Boulevard, Lansing, Michigan 48910, on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. There will be visitation at the church on Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, River’s Edge Community Church, 5222 Dumond Court, Lansing, Michigan 48917 or Velda Rose United Methodist Church, 5540 E. Main Street, Mesa, Arizona, 85205. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
