Eleanore McGrain

Eleanore (VanSickle) McGrain, 90, of Lansing, MI, passed away February 17, 2012 after a brief illness.

Eleanore was born on January 16, 1922 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Ellis VanSickle and Olga (Ulrich) VanSickle. Eleanore married Thomas W. McGrain on June 20, 1945. He predeceased her in 2009. Eleanore is survived by two sons: David A. (Joanne) McGrain of Mackinaw City, MI, and Brian E. (Susan) McGrain of Fairview, PA; five grandchildren: Elizabeth (Aaron) French, Aurora, CO; Christina (Philip) Roels, Salisbury, NC; Brian M. (Rion Hollenbeck) McGrain, Lansing, MI; Andrea McGrain, Fairview, PA; and Kenneth McGrain, Fairview, PA; and two great grandchildren: Luke Roels and Violet French.

Eleanore graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1939 and Michigan State College in 1943. She taught chemistry at Michigan State College from 1944 to 1946. She lived in several states and foreign countries while her husband served as an Air Force officer. She and her family returned to East Lansing in 1964. She taught chemistry at East Lansing High School from 1966 to 1979.

A memorial service will be conducted in the spring at Arlington National Cemetery at the family’s convenience to inurn the remains of Eleanore and Thomas, Lt Col, USAF (Retired) with full military honors in the Columbarium.

A special thanks goes to the staff at Grandhaven Living Center for their loving and compassionate care for Eleanore during the last months of life.
