E. Lois (Broughton) Floyd

Lois FloydAfter a lengthy and courageous battle with dementia, Lois passed away July 15, 2011.  She was born March 3, 1923, in Garner, NC, to Joseph Marvin and Edna Theresa Broughton.

Lois and her 16 siblings grew up poor in finances but rich in family and all that means on a small tobacco farm in what was then rural North Carolina.  Leaving the farm at the tender age of 18, Lois headed to the “big city” of Washington, D.C. to attend nursing school at The Washington Home For Incurables where she proudly attained her LPN in 1942.  It was while working in Washington, D.C. that she met the man of her dreams, Charles (Chuck) Floyd then serving in the Army Air Corps. Following a courtship during the trying times of WWII which included a lengthy hospitalization of Chuck, they wed in May 1944.  Following his discharge from the service, Lois and Chuck eventually migrated to Ann Arbor where she worked in apartment management proudly helping to put him through school at the University of Michigan.  Following his graduation they settled in Lansing where Lois worked as the office manager for the Peterson Realty Company and later in real estate sales for Duane Andersen Real Estate.  In 1979 she and Chuck both retired and traveled extensively and enjoyed visiting their many friends and relatives around the country. Widowed in 1985, Lois continued to be active and independent and enjoyed many wonderful friendships.

Her drive and interest in real estate ultimately led to her election to the Brookside Village Board of Directors in 1994.  She served in various board capacities culminating with two terms as President.  If one were to ask Lois what she was most proud of in her life however she would, without hesitation, answer her family.  As an example, she once wrote in a 200-page genealogy study that “there was never a divorce among the 17 children (her siblings).  That says a lot about the security of our childhood.”   Later in Lois’ life she received immense pleasure from her children and her grandchildren and their life experiences.  Even while dementia cruelly stole her life away, she always worried about how her grandkids were doing and asked about them repeatedly.   They were truly special to her in a way that words cannot adequately represent.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband and many of her siblings.  Surviving are:  sons, Charles D. (Laurie) Floyd and Ronald C. (Robin) Floyd; 4 grandchildren, Kevin (Jamie), Richard (Jennifer), Steven (Laurie) and David; 4 great-grandchildren, Chase, Logan, Ashlyn and Dane; and special friend, Judy Crites.

There will be no public funeral service.  Interment will take place in Deepdale Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice or any Dementia/Alzheimer’s organization in memory of Lois Floyd.
