Dr. Maxine A. Eyestone

Professor Emeritus, Michigan State University. Age 93, of Lansing, MI, died September 28, 2016.

Dr. Eyestone was born in Lansing on July 28, 1923, attended Old Lansing Central High School, where she was graduated with the class of January 1941. She worked for the Lansing State Journal as theater critic, college correspondent, and assistant to the society editor from 1941 to 1946. She received her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from Michigan State University and joined the faculty there in October 1946, where she taught written and spoken English, communication skills, and American Thought and Language, retiring in January, 1995, after 49 years on the MSU faculty. Dr. Eyestone was a member of the University Club, the Sound-Vision Society of WKAR-TV, the Michigan Women’s Studies Association, and St. Mary Cathedral. She had earlier been a member of Phi Kappa Phi, scholastic honorary, and a number of other honorary organizations. She was associate editor with several colleagues of a two-volume anthology of American literature.

There are no survivors.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016, at St. Mary Cathedral with Bishop Emeritus of Kalamazoo James A. Murray as celebrant. Burial will be in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Diocese of Lansing for the Eyestone Endowment for St. Mary Cathedral or to MSU University Advancement for the Eyestone Endowment for WKAR-TV or the Eyestone Endowment for Wharton Center.
