Rose Marie (Simon) Gruenwald

Age 87, of Holt, MI, passed away peacefully at her home on April 9, 2014, with family at her side. Rose was born on June 8, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph and Sadie (Shaheen) Simon.  She was preceded in passing by her parents and brothers Abraham, John and Samuel.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband and true love of nearly 61 years, Arthur Gruenwald; three devoted daughters, Paula Buckman (Joseph Buckman), Lynn Gruenwald (Norm Williams), and Gail Gruenwald  (Wil Cwikiel); two adored granddaughters, Kate Cwikiel and Sadie Cwikiel; sister, Jeanette Bopp; and many special nieces and nephews.

Rose was a beautiful and gracious woman.  She was a genuine listener who always put the interests of others ahead of her own.  Rose lived her life with a great sense of humor and profound wisdom.

Rose graduated from Western High School in 1944.  Prior to marriage, she worked for several years as executive secretary to the president of Cadillac Motors.  She also worked many years at Honeywell Corporation before she retired.

Over the years, she enjoyed morning crosswords, golfing, bowling, oil painting, and reading about health and nutrition. She was passionate about animal rights and belonged to several organizations to help animals.

Rose and Art created many happy memories for family and friends at their cottage in Empire, Michigan and in Florida during the winters.

Above all, Rose devoted her life to her husband and family.  Thank you for being the Angel in our lives.  We will love and miss you until we come to join you, where the ‘Sun Always Shines’.

A private family memorial service will be held. Friends and family are encouraged to visit the Estes-Leadley website to view Rose’s photo memory book and to share a condolence, at www.estesleadley.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Rose’s honor to the Michigan Humane Society  (1-248-283-5659, tribute #736844) or  St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (1-800-822-6344, tribute #35824607).

TO THOSE I LOVE AND THOSE WHO LOVE ME

When I am gone, release me, let me go.

I have so many things to see and do

You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears.

Be happy that we had so many years.

I gave you my love, you can only guess

How much you gave to me in happiness.

I thank you for the love you each have shown,

But now it’s time I traveled on alone.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must.

Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a while that we must part,

So bless those memories in your heart.

I won’t be far away, for life goes on.

So if you need me, call and I will come,

Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near

And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear

All of my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you must come this way alone,

I’ll greet you with a smile and ‘Welcome Home.’

Deepest Sympathy to Uncle Art and all of Aunt Rose’s family.
Aunt Rose was a second Mother to me in childhood and teen years. Although I only saw her rarely, I planned to be as charming as her. When I dressed up for High-school parties, my parents said I spoke “like Aunt Rose.” May lovely memories help you, as time passes.
My Prayers are with you.

I worked with Rose at Cadillac, and she was one of my bridesmaids. Even though we lost contact with each other, I always remembered her as a special friend of mine. Art and her entire family has our deepest sympathy.

I am so sorry to hear about Rose. She changed the minds of a lot of us chauvinists over the years, without us even knowing it. She was a great person and we are all the better for having known and loved her.

I am so very sorry to hear about your Mom. Your Dad and you and your sisters took such good care of her. Finding their peace at last is a comfort, I truly understand. I will always have the memory of going up North with your parents and Peppy and the root beer float. I remember how much your Mom laughed as did all of us. It was one of those laugh til you cried moments.

Your mom taught me apple pie could be delicious with a whole wheat crust, and not to bet with Mr. G because even though I was only twelve he didn’t mind taking all the money. Some of my happiest childhood memories are spending time with your folks and mine at lake a da mich. I can still hear Mrs. G at the card table saying…now Chip…

If there is anythung you should need let us know. Give our love to your dad, we are thinking of you!

Dear Art and Family, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to you on the loss of your dear wife and mother, Rose. Her absence will be felt by many for many years to come and there is no doubt that Rose’s passing will be a great loss to all who knew her. I had so much fun golfing with her at Glen Lakes and enjoyed the time we spent together. I know that was a while ago but all the wonderful memories are with me and for that I’m grateful. With deepest sympathy and prayers for all.

Art, Gail, Paula, Lynn, Kate and Sadie,
We have the greatest memories of the wonderful times we had together, both in Farmington and on Lake Michigan in Ludington and Empire! Rose was always an anchor, the calm center. I remember when she took care of Karen and me when our parents went to Europe; she took on the big job of brushing through my long curly hair and braiding it everyday. What a project! And she seemed happy to do it! She also got us ready for that Halloween — I was the pregnant lady and Gail was the baby of the year. Haha! I also remember when she supported our little “cool pops” business – using the Kool-Aid she bought, her tupperware, and her freezer. She always gave us maximum leash, while keeping a firm eye on things. And she was always stylish and beautiful. We little girls were lucky to have women like her and my mom to admire, and we all grew up to be strong women because of them. I will always hold her in my heart as a role model and second mother to me. My deepest condolences to all of you. Rose will be sorely missed.

To Art, Paula, Lynn, Gail, Kate, Sadie and families:
I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Rose. As a friend of Paula, Lynn, and Gail growing up in the same neighborhood, I had a “second mom” in Rose. I was trying to remember the names of the popsicles the Gruenwald girls and the Larson sisters sold in the summer, and then I read Mary Jo’s post – of course! Cool Pops! We had a lot of fun making different flavors and I’m sure we ate many more than we sold. We had so much fun at the Gruenwald’s pool, jumping into the water and running out, playing Marco Polo, and bobbing around in pool toys. My mom often came, but if she couldn’t for some reason, Rose would supervise us, and my parents felt perfectly comfortable with Rose in charge. There were times I’m sure Rose had other things she wanted to do, but if the kids wanted to swim, she was poolside, overseeing the girls’ antics. We would often stay all day and Rose would graciously prepare lunch for us. Those times were a part of my idyllic summers, along with going to Ludington, (and Empire) and then Pentwater. Many kids go to summer camp now, but because we had fun and supportive moms who watched over us, we made our own summer camps. And Rose always looked fabulous; in the summer she wore way-cool sunglasses and radiated a glamorous aura, even as she supervised her kids AND her daughters’ friends. I lost my mom last December, and now the second mom of my childhood has departed this world, which makes me very sad. I have wonderful reminisces of Rose and hope memories of your remarkable wife, mom, and grandma are able to be a comfort to all of you.
Love, Karen

The photo tribute to your Mom was wonderful, as was seeing young pictures of you, Paula. It was clear that you have a family full of love for each other and that your Mom and Dad enjoyed their life and their family. The poem was perfect. Just remember that your Mom will always be in the hearts of those that loved her, and that she is only a thought away.

What a beautiful woman, family, and life! Those pictures exuded joy and love…what else can you ask for. BTW, a pretty stunning golf swing as well…now I know where Paula got her hole-in-one mad skills.

Love to you, Paula and Joe, as well as the rest of your family!
