Gertrude E. Mitchell

Lansing, Michigan. Age 96, passed away March 28, 2014. She was born May 18, 1917, in Lansing, daughter of the late Charles and Amelia Whitman.

 

Gertrude graduated from Lansing Central High School. She served on the Women’s Commission, the Lansing Historical Board, and Friends of Durant Park. She volunteered many places over the span of many years including: Lansing Hospice, Volunteers of America, American Red Cross, Capitol City Airport, C.A.I.R. and Ele’s Place. She was honored with the Lansing State Journal Volunteer of the Year award in 1981 and the Tri-County Volunteer of the Year award in 2013. Gertrude also loved to sing in the choir.

 

She is survived by her children, Pat Radtke of Lansing and Sandra Barringer of Lansing; grandson, Donald (Annette) Radtke and their children, Leslie, Donald, Jr. and Stacey of Jackson, MI; and nephew, Earl (Jane) Whitman of Detroit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Mitchell; brother, Harold Whitman; and daughter, Judy Krantz.

 

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Deepdale Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel.
