May Hasbany Church

May (May 15, 1918 – May 18, 2013) was a longtime resident of Lansing and a graduate of Lansing Central High School in 1936.  She was the widow of Llewellyn B. Church who died in 1982. During her life she worked to support her father’s entrepreneurial endeavors – an ice cream factory, a grocery store, a restaurant and parking lots.  She was a devout member of St. Andrews Orthodox Church, where her family had been founding members.

May was preceded in death by her parents, Abraham and Sarah; her sister, Laura, and brothers, Woodrow, Lawrence and Roosevelt; and cousin, Donald Deeb.  She is survived by two nieces, Cynthia Mathis and Sara (Dan) Miller; and two nephews, Woodrow J. Hasbany and Thomas (Donna) Hasbany and their families.  A grandniece wrote, “When I think of Aunt May, I think of a little lady with a warm smile, a hilarious laugh, a deep religious faith and an enormous heart.”

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.  Her family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, with a Panikhida service at 6:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew Orthodox Church, or to the charity of one’s choice in memory of May Church.
