Shirley M. Gingrich

Shirley, age 88, of Lansing, MI, passed away September 17, 2013. She was born October 15, 1924, in Detroit, daughter of the late Orwell and Effie Garner.

Shirley was a lady who enjoyed many things. She graduated with a horticulture degree from MSU, and of course, kept a beautiful garden. She loved to cook and have family and friends over to entertain. She enjoyed singing and was very good at whistling. Shirley was involved for many years in a quilting guild. In her early years she used to fence and at the age of 85, she flew her first kite. She spent much of her time contributing to numerous charities and was a longtime volunteer at Sparrow Hospital. She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church where she was also a bell ringer. Shirley had a passion for animals, especially cats. She was known for taking care of, and adopting her neighborhood felines.

She is survived by her daughter, Edith Gingrich; grandchildren, Cathleen (Joe) Franco and Toby (Brandy) Radcliffe; 6 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Mary Gingrich; brother-in-law, Vincent Brown; nieces and nephews, Bonnie Brown, Steve (Vicki) Brown, and Patricia (Jim) Lommel; and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Samuel, son John Gingrich and sister Jean Brown.

 The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20, 2013, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Lansing Rd., Lansing. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Colfax Cemetery, Bad Axe, MI. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to her church.
