Ruth B. Fox

East Lansing, Michigan.

Ruth Bufman Fox was born in Haifa, then in the British mandate of Palestine on January 17, 1927, and died in East Lansing, MI on January 29, 2016.

She grew up in Tel Aviv and attended the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She served in the Israel Defense Forces during Israel’s War of Independence in 1948. She came to the United States in 1949 to continue her education at the University of California at Berkeley, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics in January 1951 and a Master’s Degree in June 1952.

At a University Students’ Cooperative Association dance she met Martin Fox and they became instantly inseparable. Martin and Ruth were married August 29, 1951 and were together until his death February 20, 1998.

They moved to East Lansing in 1959 when Martin became an MSU faculty member and became active participants in the community’s social, cultural and political life. They were among the founders of Congregation Kehillat Israel and were regulars at Wharton Center events. They traveled the world together, including a round the world sabbatical year that included stops in Tel Aviv and in Chengdu. Ruth became a follower of the Detroit Tigers and of Michigan State sports.

Ruth was a proud mother and a devoted grandmother. She is survived by her brother, Zev (Vilma) Buffman of Clearwater, Florida, her three sons, Alan (Sally Long) of Lansing, Ron (Sue Forbes) of East Lansing and Dan of Okemos, and eight grandchildren, Jacob Fox-Long, Sarah Fox-Long, Adam Fox-Long, Jaquelin Fox-Long, Shoshie Fox-Long, Erin Warmels, Tristan Warmels and Bryn Forbes.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel with Rabbi Michael Zimmerman officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing. A meal of condolence will immediately follow the burial at Congregation Kehillat Israel in Lansing.

I saw your mothers obit in the paper. So many great memories of your family!! I can not believe how grown up they must all be! Where does time go? Also never realized your connection with Sue and Bryn. I enjoy seeing his picture in the paper. I really can still see a little boy in him. Give my best to all the kids. We had some really fun times in preschool with Adam, Jackie and Shoshie. My thoughts are with you.
