Joseph J. Kobus

Joseph J. Kobus passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 17, 2013. He was born in Charlotte, Michigan on August 21, 1927 to the late John and Julia Kobus. Joseph was a member of St. Casimir Church in Lansing. He attended grade school at St. Casimir and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He married the love of his life, Bernice Kobus on January 29, 1949. Joe worked for Jet Die and Engineering in Lansing. He left his job to pursue his dream as a small business owner. An entrepreneur, Joe was the proud owner of The Colonial Bar and Grille in Lansing. His business brought him much joy; customers and friends could find him in his favorite booth sitting beside his wife every day at lunch up until his final days. Joseph loved his family and spent most of his time with his son and his family, whether it was attending school events for his grandchildren or weekly Sunday dinners, his family came first. His family remembers his love of cards, following the stock market, playing golf, the Detroit Lions and trips to the casino.

Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia Kobus; sisters Mary Dombowski, Anna Kenny and Rosalie Viaches. Joseph is survived by his wife of 64 years Bernice; son John, daughter-in-law Wendy and daughter Diane Lee; grandchildren Brad (Laura) Lee, Kelly (Andrew) Toland, John Jr. and Chelsea; great-grandchild Parker; sister Carolyn Hartsuff; and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to IHM St. Casimir School or the Capital Area Humane Society.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 4-7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary. The Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 at St. Casimir Church in Lansing at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at St. Casimir one hour prior to the service.

The family invites friends to join them at Joe’s favorite place, The Colonial Bar and Grille, for a Polish dinner following the funeral.

Our deepest sorrow at your loss. We reside in FL and just returned last week. We will keep Joe in our prayers but will be unable to attend the mass and burial. May the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen
