Harland Devoist Surbeck

Harland Devoist Surbeck, age 78, of Perry, MI, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2014, at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born December 19, 1935, in Buffalo, NY, the son of Mary (Jones) and Devoist (Jake) Surbeck.

He moved to Shaftsburg, Michigan in 1946 and started working for his father at the age of 14 at Surbeck’s Texaco Service Station.  He became owner of the business in later years. Harland married Dolores (Sue) Lucille Worden on April 4, 1964. The couple had three children and lived in the area together until Sue’s death in 2000. Harland served on the Perry Board of Education in the 1980s, Woodhull Township Fire Board and the Woodhull Township Board. He served as coach for the Corcburg Teddy Bears. He loved softball and many people in the area will remember playing ball in Harland’s backyard. After retirement he enjoyed working on trains including a membership in the Steam Railroading Institute. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his sister Mary (Surbeck) Bahl; his daughters, Terri Surbeck, Jan Surbeck; grandchildren, Shondel Surbeck, Marcquis James, Kevin Cooke, Kyle Cooke; and one great-grandchild, Ava Mae. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven Surbeck (1967); wife, Dolores (Sue) Surbeck; brothers, John Robinson, Raymond Surbeck; and a sister, Shirley Rosier.

A celebration of Harland’s life will be held 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Perry Township Hall, 2770 Ellsworth Rd., Perry, MI.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the family for assistance in the cost of the arrangements. Any additional contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org. Harland use to play cards with Jack & the rest of the gang,lots of coffee ,cookies. Lots of laughs.Good times. He used to also go to the drags up north. He will be missed. Marie

May the God of all comfort fill your hurting hearts with his presence. I have many found memories of both Harland and Sue. Toni and I send our deep felt condolences.
