Genieve V. Stanaway

Genieve Virginia Stanaway, 96, went home to her Lord and Savior on July 25, 2015, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Lansing, Michigan, on December 4, 1918, to Ford and Ethel Crismore.  She graduated from Central High School in 1937, married her husband, Clarence, in 1938, and together they raised four children.

Genieve loved to cook, play cards, do needlepoint, and collect pelicans.  She was very proud of her children and all their accomplishments.  She was a Michigan State fan and especially enjoyed watching their football and basketball games.  In the last several years, she loved her weekly outings to the grocery store with her daughter preceded by enjoying a Chuckle Bear or Almond Joy latte.  She was an avid bowler from 1937 to 1978.  She was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1998, the same year she was honored as Woman of the Year for the American Business Women’s Association.  She worked as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone during her senior year of high school and after graduation.  Once her children were in school, she worked as a part-time bookkeeper/office manager at the Spartan Lanes and Holiday Bowling Lanes, until she and husband, Clarence, retired and moved to Florida.  After returning to Michigan, she worked as a receptionist at the Estes-Leadley Funeral Home.  She was a member of the following:  Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, Lansing Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association, Mason-Holt F.O.E, Auxiliary 3734, and the V.F.W., Auxiliary 4340.  She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.  She will be remembered for her constant smile, her laughter, and her generous giving spirit to all those she touched. She was always willing to help others.  She was especially grateful for the loving care she received by all the aides and nurses at Sparrow Hospice.  They enjoyed her as much as she enjoyed them.  They were amazed at her sense of humor and smile until her last days.

Genieve was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 51 years, Clarence, and daughter-in-law Marcy Stanaway.  Surviving to cherish her memory are daughter, Barbara Craig of Albuquerque, NM; son, Jack (Sharon) Stanaway of Holt, MI; daughter, Beverly (Barry) Bishop of Holt, MI; son, Daryl Stanaway of Weatherford, TX; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; several cousins and many, many friends. She is also survived by companion, Richard Hammond, and his 3 daughters: Laurie (Steve) Tooker, Christy Hammond, and Cindy Chapin.

The funeral service will be held at Mt. Hope United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m.  Her family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice Services or Mt. Hope United Methodist Church in memory of Genieve.

We were blessed to know her and our cousins plus to have the time together that we did, she invited me to her business woman’s ceremony and showed me that woman did and could do wonderful works, plus she had such a gentle way about her, she will be missed. We will forever be grateful for the part she played in each and everyone of our lives. Blessings to her life well lived and cherished.
