Anthony N. Conti

Anthony N. Conti, age 64, left us on January 8, 2011 with family at his side after a short but courageous battle with cancer.  He was born on September 26, 1946 in Detroit, MI, the son of Orlando and Jane Conti.  He graduated from Mt. Clemens St. Mary’s High School in 1964 and continued his education at Michigan State University, receiving a full football scholarship.  Tony played on the 1965, 1966 and 1967 teams, serving as Co-Captain in his senior year.  He contributed to two Big Ten Championships during those years but played in the Rose Bowl only once due to the no-repeat rule.  He also played in the Notre Dame 10-10 tie game.

Tony entered the insurance business in 1978 and established his own agency in East Lansing, MI a few years thereafter.  He enjoyed meeting and working with people, a fact well established by a plethora of friends.  He and his wife spent an inordinate amount of time following their sons in hockey, traveling across the United States and Canada.  He loved spending time at their cottage on Hubbard Lake, looking forward to the weekend trips to “God’s Country.”

He was preceded in death by his father, Orlando, his nephew, Anthony Conti, his father-in-law, Robert C. Fochtman and his brother-in-law, Robert F. Fochtman.  Surviving are his beloved wife of 32 years, Sharon; children, Todd Pelton (Kristin) of Elizabeth City, NC, Matthew of Denver, CO, and Zachary of East Lansing, MI, grandchildren Hailey and Amber Pelton of Elizabeth City, NC, brothers Nicholas (Vergie)  of Bloomfield Hills, MI and John (Donna) of Memphis, MI and sister Theresa (Richard) Schaser of Westerville, OH.  He is also survived by nieces Susan (Mark) Johnson and Monica Conti, nephew Aaron Conti and great-nephew Nicholas Johnson and great-niece Claire Johnson.

The Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Gerard Church on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 12:00 noon.  Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. at Estes Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Friday, January 14, 2011, and from 6-9 p.m. at St. Gerard Church, on Friday evening, January 14, 2011 with the Rosary at 8:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the MSU Football Players Association, Duffy Daugherty Football Building, MSU, East Lansing, MI 48823, St. Gerard Parish Society of St. Vincent DePaul, 4437 W. Willow Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917, or St. Gerard School Student Financial Aid, 4433 W. Willow Hwy, Lansing, MI 48917.

I’m so sorry to hear about Tony’s passing. He was always so kind to me personally and was a great supporter of GLAHA and youth hockey in Lansing. He will be missed.

When I think of Tony, I think of strength, focus, love, integrity. He was a good , good, man and will be sorely missed as a friend and colleague. If there is a coffee shop in heaven, some angel is being told about MSU Football, fixed annuities, or Sharon and the kids.
