Alan Emory Sawyer

Alan Emory SawyerAge 88, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.  He was born August 11, 1927, in Lansing, MI, to Emory and Fern (Boyce) Sawyer.  Alan was a lifelong resident of Lansing.  Upon graduation from Eastern High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as an electronics technician during WWII.  He was recalled to serve his country again during the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Oriskiny.  Between his navy tours of service, Alan attended Michigan State University, where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering.  This led to his employment at General Motors Oldsmobile Division in the Plant Engineering Department for 35 years (and as Alan always added, “20% overtime”).  Upon his retirement in 1985, Alan and his wife, Marian, became world travelers.  They enjoyed going on cruises and tours to Europe, the Caribbean and within the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.  Alan loved golf and bowling and was very proud of his 299 and 300 rings (which he obtained at the age of 80), his 298 watch and 26 trophies.  He enjoyed having a cottage on Houghton Lake for many years where he did a lot of boating (he built his own boat), fishing, waterskiing, motorcycling and snowmobiling.  Alan was an avid sports fan and never missed an opportunity to watch his alma mater, MSU, play.

Surviving are:  his beloved wife of 60 years, Marian; his 5 children, Gail, Gary, Gregg (Sandy), Glenn and Geannine; 10 grandchildren, Matthew, Robert (U.S. Navy) (Allison), Jennifer, Haley, Tyler, Gabriel (U.S. Army) (Lisa), Jeremy, Brandon, Dylan and Ethan; 3 great-grandchildren, Robert Jr., Dale and Isabella; and friend, Patrick.

Private services for the family have been held.  Marian encourages everyone to give your loved ones a hug and tell them you love them.

Sorry to hear of Al’s passing. I read the obituary in today’s paper. My family enjoyed many good times with your family at Houghton Lake. Al was a very good friend. Take care of yourself.

My sympathy goes out to you Marian and all the family, also from Bert and Ed too. Al was such a nice guy and would tollerate us ladies when we came over or when we went out to a movie, etc. He had a good sense of humor as you. Please know you are in my prayers and I am thinking about you. Marian, call me as your friends want to give you our love and support-when you are ready. Love and prayers, your adopted daughter(you’d always kid me), Donna

Our sincere sympathy Marian to you & the family. Was so surprised to
hear the news. Always enjoyed seeing Al at the front door when we
would go out together. Please take care and maybe soon we can get
together sometime and do some serious gabbing. We all miss you
and wish you the best.

Our love, prayers and sympathy are with you.

Dear Marian
So sorry to read about the passing of, Al. You are in our thoughts and prayers. I had mail returned from you and tried forwarding it to an address in Detroit area and it came back. Would sure like to reestablish our long time friendship. We always exchanged correspondence and cards. I am still at the same address and have the same phone. Please call or drop me a line. I would love to hear from you or talk to you. In the meantime know we are thinking about you in your time of loss. Take care and God Bless. Love Arleen

Dear Marian, I’m sending you this message at the request of and on behalf of my mother who is in Alabama for the next few weeks. She wanted to make sure you knew how sorry she was to hear about Al’s passing. You and Al were always valued friends to her and her Al. Please take care and our thoughts are with you.
