Ethna (Geovanes) Haggerty

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN –

ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS

On October 30, 2010 the world said goodbye to a lovely lady who gave so much of herself to others, while family and special friends were at her side.

She was preceded in death by: Her infant daughter Nanatte, by sisters Mary Metes, Kathryn Stavros, Bessie Vlahakis and Pauline Geovanes; brothers George and Crist Geovanes, and niece Catherine Paganini.

She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Esch and son-in-law Gene Esch; niece, Sophia (Jerry) Beadle; nephews, Tom (Yvonne) Metes, George (Sarah) Stavros, James (Susanne) Stavros and several great-nieces and nephews; special friend, Mary Volakakis; and her special God-grandchildren, Alli Knot, Michael Esch, Andrea Doneth, and Danielle Doneth-Guty.

Ethna graduated from Eastern High School in 1938 and was Lansing All-City Champion in Tennis Doubles.  She loved all sports and was an outstanding softball player.  She retired from General Motors after 30 years of service, and also was an active member of the UAW, a very committed member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, an active member of the Daughters of Penelope, Philoptochos Society and a member of the Church Choir.

After retiring, Ethna enjoyed walking at the Lansing Mall where she met many new friends.  In the winter, she travelled to Florida where she loved to go on cruises, walk the beach, while attending and volunteering at the St. Catherine Greek Church in Melbourne, where she became very involved with the success of their Greek Festival.  She was a mentor to many of her daughter’s friends.

The family thanks all who visited her during her stay at Sparrow Hospice House and the staff who lovingly cared for her.

The celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1701 E. Saginaw St., Lansing with Fr. Mark Sietsema officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a Trisagion Service to be held at 7:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in loving memory of Ethna may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or to Sparrow Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
