MaryNan Cain Walker

MaryNan Walker, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, after a courageous six-month battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.

MaryNan was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI on October 11, 1946.  She was the third child, and only daughter, of Charles and Helen Henchey Cain. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant, MI and Central Michigan University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s Degree in secondary education.  She taught high school at Muskegon Heights High School and in Columbus, Ohio.  After several years of teaching her career path led her to study law at Mercer University Law School in Macon, Georgia.  She became a civil litigator.

She met Paul A. Walker and was married in 1979.  She practiced law for two years then gave up her practice to raise their two sons, Joseph Henchey Walker and Christopher Paul Walker, and to aid her husband in his career as a hospital administrator.  They lived in Birmingham, AL, Rocky Mount, NC, and eventually settled in Rock Hill, SC.  She had a strong faith and was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Rock Hill.  She loved her family and was extremely proud of her children.  Although she lived in the south for many years, northern Michigan held a special place in her heart and she enjoyed her summers on the beach in Manistee.

Mary had a quick mind, a genuine smile, and a wonderfully warm and engaging personality.  She loved people and had many friends.  She was very comfortable amongst people and always made everyone feel special.

MaryNan was preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Raedelle Cain, and an infant nephew Joshua Cain.  She will be terribly missed by her sons, Joseph Walker, age 28, of Atlanta, GA and Christopher (Lucie) Walker, age 25, of 29 Palms, CA, brothers John (Sheryl) Cain of Hemet, CA, James (Sandy) Cain of Grand Ledge, MI and Patrick (Jeannie) Cain of Lansing, MI.  Also are her nephews Jim, Bruce and Matt Cain, James and Jeremy White, nieces Caryn and Melissa Cain, Christine Banser, and numerous friends in both Michigan and South Carolina.

The family of MaryNan would like to express thanks to the staff of Sparrow Hospital for their wonderful care and personal attention during her treatments and stay.  You made her last days as comfortable as possible and the family appreciates the love, gentle care, and concern shown for her well-being.

Visitation for MaryNan Walker will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.  Hours will be Monday from 2-4 p.m. with a rosary said at 7:00 p.m., followed by visitation until 9:00 p.m.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee, MI.

As an alternative to flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne’s Parish in Rock Hill, South Carolina or to a charity of your choice.

MaryNan was a wonderful, witty, and fun-loving girl. We had many great times together. She was the reason I left Maryland and moved to Columbus, in 1971. She has been fondly thought of, often, over these passing years.

I am just finding out about her passing, and I am very shocked, and moved. I wish her boys, and her brothers my best wishes. I will forever keep her in my prayers. …Scott.
