Marlene Ann (Baker) Greening

On July 17, 2011, Marlene Ann Greening passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer. Marlene was born in Jackson, MI to Donald and Freida Baker on October 7, 1931.

She attended Jackson Public Schools and graduated from Jackson High School in 1949. After high school graduation Marlene enrolled in the E.W. Sparrow School of Nursing, graduating in 1952. She was employed as a registered nurse for over 30 years at Sparrow Hospital and ended her working career at the Ingham County Health Dept. retiring in 1996.

Marlene is survived by her husband of 58 years, Foster Greening, and their two daughters Lori Greening and her fiancé, Jay Detweiler of Estes Park, CO and Jan Chappell of Haslett, MI. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Caleb McCartney and Jacob McCartney both of Fort Collins, CO, Claire Chappell of Golden, CO and Alayne Chappell of San Francisco, CA. Marlene is also survived by her brother Dick Baker of Jeffersonville, IN and many nieces and nephews. Marlene was preceded in death by her loving son, Kenton Greening of Muskegon, in October 2009, her parents Donald and Freida Baker, and sister Joanne Colquhoun. Marlene was an actively-involved member of Grace United Methodist Church, Lansing, MI. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren; was an avid reader who enjoyed playing cards and knitting. Marlene will be dearly missed by her family and many wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church, 1905 W. Mt. Hope Ave., in Lansing on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jane Ellen Johnson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
