Armin S. "Doc" Roe

Doc Roe passed away peacefully on June 30, 2011 after a long illness.  He was born in Lansing on September 16, 1930, and was the last living grandchild of R.E. Olds, the founder of Oldsmobile.

He loved boats and boating and spent many of his favorite times exploring the Great Lakes and especially the rocky shores, bays, and backwaters of Lake Huron’s North Channel.  He loved teaching others navigation skills and safe boating practices as a tireless volunteer in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years.  He loved math and computers and was an early adopter of computer technology writing his own actuarial software in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.

Doc’s family will remember him with great affection as a good and loving father, a teller of many stories, and as a spirited man who loved travel, sports, and a good meal.

He is survived by his son David Roe of Bainbridge Island, WA; David’s wife Sarah; two grandchildren, Kelsey and Ellis; and Doc’s former wife Louise Shumway.

Many thanks to Doc’s niece Clela “Bunny” Gray, her family, and the caregivers she coordinates through her business, Helping Hands Home Health Care, for all their help in the last few years with his special needs, and many thanks to the staff at Dimondale Nursing Care Center.

An open house memorial gathering will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel in downtown Lansing (325 West Washtenaw) on Thursday, July 14, 2011 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Remembrances can be made to the American Diabetes Association, the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum, or to the charity of your choice.

My condolences to Mr. Roe’s family! I grew up with his son and lived next door to Bunny Smith as a youth.
